• Are you looking for a Fiat 500? After November, you can buy a brand-new 2024 Fiat 500e.
  • If you want an original, you can get one from an Italian company fixing cars from 1957 to 1975.
  • Genuine Italian Vehicles are ready and able to ship finished cars anywhere in the United States. The cheapest builds cost less than $10,000, which includes the vehicle.

Mark November 2023 on your calendars if you like city cars. At that time, Fiat North America will show off the 2024 500e made for the U.S. market. But it’s not the only reincarnation of the Cinquecento. It’s a good fit for Fiat’s current U.S. range and people who want a trendy electric vehicle. A new Italian business is making classic 500 resto-mods that cost less than Singer’s 911s or Cyan Racing’s Volvo P1800s.

The name Real Italian Cars is one of the shortest and most accurate in the car business. The new store’s offices are in the Italian city of Lucca, which is in the Tuscan region. The second main goal of the business is to restore the original Fiat Nuova 500, a famous Italian car. Third, the company’s three founders, Adedeo Provenzali, Anthony Peacock, and Mattia Vita, all have connections to the Italian car industry. Vita, for instance, often takes part in races, and Peacock has given advice to Pirelli Media and written for several motoring magazines.

Peacock told Car and Driver recently over the phone that he and Peacock have known each other for a long time and love classic 500s. He said that even though “millions and millions” of these Fiats were made, “they’re a dying breed.” The three of them tried to keep the ones left so they could have something for the future.”It began as a hobby, and the first people to hire me were friends who needed fixes. He said, “Without realizing it, we were trying to set up a business that would encourage more people, especially younger people, to buy classic cars.”

Real Italian Cars will take any Fiat 500 made between 1957 and 1975, from the basic 500D to the beautiful 500 Jolly with straw seats and an open top. The company offers a wide range of services, from easy changes to the outside to maintenance on the inside and engine to a complete restoration or custom overhaul. This includes nice modern touches like a radio that works with Apple CarPlay. Before you ask, the company has already been asked to make cars resembling Abarths.

Real Italian Cars can replace the 499cc two-cylinder air-cooled engine and crash gearbox with a Fiat 126 drivetrain if you don’t want to go full scorpion. The bigger engine (594cc or 652cc, based on the year of the donor) and gear synchros give the bike more power. The 126 switch is on Peacock’s 500, and he says, “The extra power and synchromesh make a difference.” We’re more likely to believe him since a stock 1957 500 can’t even reach 60 mph and takes longer to go a quarter mile than some YouTube ads. Also, the synchros allow driving your old car around town without grinding and double-clutch—even more, reason to enjoy your usual dolce vita daily.

There may be more comfort in the future. Peacock says Real Italian Cars is now making and testing a prototype of an EV-swapped Nuova 500 prototype. He said that the batteries made the car heavier, making the brakes the only trouble. Aside from that, he says that old Fiats, with their simple motor designs, “is perfect, perfect cars to become E.V.s.” If everything goes as planned, the choice to turn a car into an E.V. could be available by the end of summer 2023. American buyers can choose between two electric Fiat 500 models in November if everything goes as planned.

Yes, you read that right. Real Italian Cars will take orders from people in the United States and can even set up shipping. Peacock says the company has already been asked to build cars for a man from Florida and California who wants to drive his new little Fiat across Italy this summer. The 25-year rule applies to all of these cars, even though each state has different laws about registering a rebuilt 1957–1975 500. All 126s except the newest ones are exempt from California’s smog checks, but none of the older ones are. If you have enough money, you should be able to drive one of these resto-mods in the United States.

When it comes to money, you won’t need much. You’re paying “mates’ rates” (this is British slang, but Real Italian Cars are in London, so that we can use it) like when the business was just a hobby for friends. The prices of the shop’s builds start at €9000, which is about $9800. The cost of the donor car is also given. As with other restomod processes, the price increases as the customization amount goes up. And the starting price is different for each type of 500. For example, the starting price for restoring an original Jolly is just over $27K. But a real Nuova 500 without the wicker costs between $10,000 and $20,000 today, so these prices are pretty good.
