• Compared to a Fiat 500 or any Ferrari, the small, boxy, and practical Fiat Panda better represents modern Italy.
  • This picture shows a 4×4 from the last year of the first generation made in a limited number.
  • It’s the Aspromonte Goat with a strong 4×4 motor from Steyr-Puch.

Because pandas are important in Italian culture, Fiat made a video about an island with more pandas than people. Giorgetto Giugiaro made the first boxy one in 1979. Over the years, so many of them have been sold that you can still see them in dusty country yards or Rome’s back streets.

If you’ve been to Italy, you’ve seen pandas for sure. Your chance to own a beautiful Italianate is beautiful.

Bring a Trailer is a Hearst Autos publication comparable to it. It is currently holding a sale for a 1985 Fiat Panda 4×4 Edizione Limitata. The original Panda was made in 1985. This one was fixed up in Bologna, Italy, and then moved to Connecticut.

The 4×4 Panda, which came out in 1983, is a rugged off-roader, even though it only has a few horsepower. It had a body shell that was heavily reinforced and a complete four-wheel-drive driveline made by the Austrian company Steyr-Puch. Steyr-Puch did make the first Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, which is true.

The Panda has a short hood that can be opened to get to the spare tire. But underneath it is a new 965cc four-cylinder engine that was part of restoring the car. When it was brand new, it had 48 horsepower, which may not sound like much, but it was an Italian horsepower. Even though your hands don’t move faster when you work them out, you can make much more noise.

You heard the part about the G-Wagen. This little car is about as big as Danny DeVito but can handle rough terrain like a young Arnold Schwarzenegger. This is a car with the Twins from 1988.

Even though the odometer says less than 38,000 kilometers (or miles), the complete renovation makes this car stand out. Due to the Panda’s low curb weight, it’s impossible to flip it onto its roof, and you could eat right off its belly. It’s clean, in good shape, and ready to get dirty.
