So that the car industry can move toward more electric drivetrains, the second-generation Acura NSX has to be phased out. Even though the most recent NSX was a hybrid, Acura is all in on BEVs. All signs point to the third-generation NSX being a fully electric BEV supercar, which the company has revealed. The latest example is the brand-new Acura Electric Vision Design Study concept car, which the company showed off at Monterey Car Week along with the new ZDX and ZDX Type S electric SUVs. Even though it’s just an idea, Acura still needs to be ready to tell us everything, and they’re telling us even less. The Acura Design Studio in Los Angeles made the concept car, a shadow-covered coupe. The vehicle’s shape makes it look like it might have gullwing or scissor doors, and the green neon pattern makes me think of science fiction from the early 1990s. The tops of the wheel arches are higher than the roof line, which could be a sign of electric motors in the wheel hubs. Acura isn’t saying much else about the idea except that it’s an “expression of an all-electric high-performance model.” If this idea turns into the third-generation NSX, it will be interesting to see how Acura pays tribute to the NSX without the V-6 engine that makes it stand out. Also, the NSX was an “underdog” compared to companies like Ferrari, which had similar speeds at a much lower price. This was part of what made it stand out. Can Acura make an electric vehicle (EV) as fast as a racecar and cost less than the new cars? Even though it’s still up in the air, we’re still interested.
