That was Wednesday when Formula One turned down Andretti Global’s and General Motors’ long-term requests to join the competition in 2025 or 2026.

As per the group’s release, F1 “would look differently on an application for the entry of a team into the 2028 Championship with a GM power unit,” yet research indicates that the Andretti brand would benefit from the World Championship of Formula One rather than the other way around.

The Formula One offer from Andretti and Cadillac was turned down

In other words, Formula One has chosen to back the goals of its ten current teams over those of a major competitor who has manufacturer support. The sport has become more popular since Liberty Media took over, which is a big change from how it usually grows. The sport’s organizers may now think they don’t need help from big companies like General Motors, which is one of the biggest car companies in the world.

Andretti made it clear two years ago that he was going to start his bid. When Cadillac joined the team in January 2023, GM said that it would only make engines for Andretti if the team were allowed. The team was accepted by the FIA, which is in charge of Formula One, after an open application process. The company has already hired people and started testing a car in a wind tunnel for 2025. All of this wasn’t enough for Formula One (F1), which put the needs of its existing team owners ahead of those of the most competitive newcomers to the sport since Toyota and Honda set up factories in the 2000s.

General Motors and Michael Andretti have not yet said anything about the choice or the idea that a different application should be accepted for 2028.
