Many of the best luxury car brands in the world started with two-door coupes or convertibles. If you will, these “halo cars” shouted out the brand’s values even though they didn’t sell many cars. Genesis has done well without one to become a real top player, but that could change soon. The company has been considering buying a top-of-the-line two-door car, and it looks like they are ready. Today, the car company showed a “trilogy” of Genesis X concept cars: an elegantly proportioned coupe, an interesting shooting-brake design study called the Speedium Coupe, and a brilliantly rendered convertible. We’d love to see a Speedium made, but both the car and the convertible will sell. Genesis Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke is said to have told dealers that the convertible exists and that a coupe partner would make sense. To match the luxury G90 car, it could be called the GT90. Genesis has already patented this name and GT70 and GT80 in the United States. Genesis will only sell this type of electric car. Since Genesis got 282 miles/365 horsepower of range out of the Electrified G80, a gas-engine car with EV gear, we expect the company’s next-generation EV platforms to make a lot more of both. For the imagined GT90 to be competitive, it would need more than 500 horsepower and a range of at least 300 miles. Since Genesis cars don’t try to compete with the Ms and AMGs of the world and instead focus on quiet spaces, stable rides, and smooth powertrains, it will be more of a luxury four-seat grand tourer than a performance car. Mercedes has the SL, BMW has the 8-series, and Lexus has the LC, but Genesis goes above and beyond its rivals. Genesis says the new car is made for people who buy the Bentley Continental GT. The goal is to sell the Conti for about $240,000, but we wonder if Genesis would charge even close to that. But it might be the first Genesis model to start at a price higher than $100,000. We need to find out what else shows that the brand is becoming more expensive if that doesn’t.
