When it came out last year, Maserati’s MCXtrema was their first original halo car in about 50 years. It’s so powerful and wide that it makes a Sopwith Camel look like a diving bell. Only 62 were made. In a way, it’s just an MC20 with more power. It was Maserati’s way of saying that it was open to all applicants, and based on the head of the race program, Maserati plans to make more one-of-a-kind cars like it. This is from Giovanni Sgro, who is the head of Maserati Corse. I talked to him after the very interesting Portland E-Prix for Formula E. As was already said, the MCXtrema was made completely digitally in eight weeks, which means it was made quickly. This is a huge accomplishment for the Maserati, which is the best-performing original Halo car ever. Sgro also thinks that “the beast,” as Maserati officially calls it, has more than proven its worth, even though it was only in development for a short time. Sgro said: “I think it makes a tremendous amount of sense to explore what this ‘few-off”s’ real future means for us.” All of us can fully represent the company because of this halo product. We were born on time, so achievement is something that needs to be talked about. Without a doubt, this car does that, but we didn’t give up on style to do it. On the other hand, it’s an amazing event that shows how important we are. There’s no doubt that these male drivers, race car drivers, and fans are very passionate about this particular car. It’s also clear that the crowd is interested in these things, which are called performance devices. And it’s important to keep going this way as well. There is a clear candidate after the MC20, but Sgro didn’t say what might open the door. The all-new Maserati GranTurismo, which is one of their newest and best-performing cars, begs to be turned into a race car. Maserati’s only other options are the Grecale and Levante, which are both crossovers and the Ghibli and Quattroporte, which are all more than ten years old. In spite of this, Maserati might still surprise us with a Grecale Corse. However, a GranTurismo Trofeo is much more likely—and emotional, as Sgro would say—than that car.
