It makes sense to develop another stunningly beautiful Mazda sports car idea. The Mazda Iconic SP, shown for the first time today at the Tokyo Auto Show, is likely the most stylish Mazda car since the RX-Vision in 2015. A two-rotor rotary hybrid engine with a great triangle twist, like an electric Miata and an FD RX-7. It makes Peter laugh as he talks about his Mazda rotary mixed invention stories.

We’ll do our best to explain what the release means, even though it’s mostly hedging and not very high-tech. It’s 164.6 inches long from the nose to the tail, 45.3 inches high at the roof, and 72.8 inches wide from side to side. This means it is about 10 inches longer and wider than an ND Miata. The car is still thought of as a small sports car. The car’s low center of gravity and 3,196-pound curb weight are spread out about 50/50 front to back thanks to a mid-mounted rotary engine. However, the news release doesn’t say if it’s front-mid or rear-mid.

The Mazda Iconic SP Concept is a rotary hybrid sports car with beautiful pop-up headlights

Mazda has indeed tried using small rotary engines to make electric cars go farther, but this looks like a standard hybrid setup, like the patent we found in May. The engine is called a “two-rotor EV system” and has a “high [power] output.” The rotary is made to burn different fuels, such as hydrogen. Why are there two rotors if it’s just a range extension for a small battery pack? This car is never called an “electric vehicle” in the news release. Mazda has been asked for more information, and if they respond positively, we’ll change the story.

Mazda says it has about 365 horsepower more than any of its other sports cars. It is also very clear about what it wants from cars. We don’t usually quote news releases from lawyers, but this one from Masahiro Moro, CEO of Mazda, pretty much says it all.

According to the speaker, Mazda consistently provides automobiles that serve as a constant reminder of the sheer delight and essential nature of cars in individuals’ lives. As an automotive enterprise that specializes in large-scale production of captivating mobility encounters, our organization is dedicated to actively influencing the trajectory of the future with our like-minded collaborators and enthusiastic supporters. Together, we want to foster an environment where individuals can confidently express their affinity for automobiles.

In addition, how? We should all agree on the design of energy here, no matter what form it takes, whether we like it or not. Doesn’t it look pretty good? Mazda’s pictures aren’t perfect, but the RX is still easy to see, especially in this back three-quarter view. The smooth shift from the long hood to the cockpit in the back of the car stands out against the huge back deck.

You might have missed this other Easter egg: Those are almost certainly headlights that pop up. You knew you liked the first version of Rocket Man when Elton John reissued it with Dua Lipa, but the return was a pleasant surprise.

Even though it’s pretty, it doesn’t look like an actual production model. These tech and design ideas should make it to the road. Mazda is one of the few companies that can make a pure and healthy electric sports car. I can’t wait to see the real thing if this is a taste of what’s coming.
