Volkswagen used to be a small company, but now it’s known for its crazy speed, at least when it comes to the Golf R. It has become a favorite among tuners because of its potent engine and all-paw grip. Galano Engineering’s work on the Golf R has been excellent. Using a stock block, they dropped the quarter-mile time to nine seconds. The crew just did a run at Heathcote Park Raceway in Victoria, Australia, and got an excellent quarter-mile time of 9.642 seconds at 140 mph. The car engineering company says this is a new world record for a Mk 7 Golf R with a stock, unmodified engine. The run was done with E85 fuel, a DSG gearbox from the factory, and an Iroz Motorsport IMS780 turbo kit. Even though it is unclear how much horsepower the Galano Engineering car has, it is enormous. It likely has between 600 and 700 horsepower, which most drag race rules say. Even though it only has 296 horsepower, a stock Mk 7 Golf R can run a quarter-mile in 13.4 seconds. It took a long journey to get here. When the Golf R IS38 stock turbo record was broken in 2021 with a run of 10.567 seconds at 127 mph, the focus shifted to breaking the stock block mark. At the time, 9.89 seconds at 139 mph was the record. Unfortunately, the team’s best time was 10.1 seconds at 135 mph, and a week later, the car was in a crash that made it impossible to drive. Over the years, the company slowly improved the Golf R, calling it “Yellowbird” in the process. When it returned to the drag strip, a test run was done with an IS38 turbo from the factory. It flew through a 10.560 pass at 125 mph, a little faster than its previous mark. This was a sign of good things to come. It broke the world record for a stock block when it was put back together with its vast turbo kit. Engines that can get much more power with the same internal parts are attractive. Because of this, the Toyota Supra and the 2JZ became famous in the tuning world. The Golf R and the EA888 engine are Volkswagen’s best efforts.
