Nissan is the first Japanese car company to publicly say it plans to use Tesla’s electric vehicle charging link. By 2025, both Tesla Superchargers and the North American Charging Standard (NACS) will work with the Nissan Ariya and any other electric cars the company makes in the future. Ariyas will get an adapter in 2024 as a holdover from the previous year. Ford, GM, and Mercedes-Benz are just a few big automakers that have moved to NACS for E.V. charging. Nissan is the most recent one to do so. As of this writing, eight companies, including Tesla, use this type of charger. It was wise to include an adaptor for these cars so that early users won’t have to deal with too much pain. Even though using an adapter is trickier than having direct compatibility, owning the only model-year Ariya that can’t use Tesla’s massive charging infrastructure would be much worse. I haven’t heard anything interesting about how the trade between Nissan and Tesla came to be. You need help finding the deal on Tesla’s media website. It shouldn’t be surprising that Tesla owners will be annoyed by sharing charging stations with other electric cars. Nissan, on the other hand, didn’t say much. All they said was that more information about the NACS implementation would be available “at a later date.” But the company is still committed to making electric cars for “more than 40% of its U.S. vehicle sales by 2030, and even more than that.” Both of these new E.V.s will be made in Canton, Mississippi. Production begins “late in 2025.”
