Henrik Fisker, a well-known car designer, said on Instagram a week ago that his new all-electric SUV, the 2024 Fisker Ocean, would range 356 miles on a full charge. He also posted pictures of several Ocean SUVs on the factory floor as the company got ready to start total production. A few days later, the EPA released its estimate of the new car’s range, which is longer than that of even Tesla’s Model Y, which was Fisker’s most efficient standard competitor. The American government has also given the Ocean the go-ahead to be sold, which is a big deal. Shipments to the U.S. are set to start this month.

The EPA says the Fisker Ocean EV SUV can travel up to 360 miles in the United States. This is 20 miles more than Fisker said when The Ocean was first released a few years ago. Fisker says that the Ocean’s range of 360 miles makes it the longest-range new electric SUV in the U.S., costing less than $200,000.

The Fisker Ocean will, of course, come in different styles and combinations, so that the price will differ for each model. For the EPA estimate, we’re looking at the 2024 Fisker Ocean Extreme, which has all-wheel drive and a “Hyper Range” battery pack with 113 kWh and 20-inch wheels. The EPA still needs to put out predictions for the whole Ocean area. European WLTP testing with the two other wheel choices shows that 22-inch wheels have a small but noticeable effect on range, adding a few miles to it.

The Fisker Ocean is the most powerful E.V. sold in Europe. Based on past WLTP cycle ratings, it can go about 707 kilometres, or over 440 miles, on a single charge. The EPA usually gives a more conservative number, but this one is closer to what Fisker found, which Henrik Fisker shared on his Instagram. But, for several reasons, the WLTP cycle is sometimes longer than the real-world range.

The Ocean Extreme and the One launch version have two e-motors, one on each axle. To save fuel, these motors can be turned off when cruising at higher speeds. This makes the engine more efficient because it only needs to use one motor to keep the same rate instead of both all the time. The motors have a total output of 468 horsepower and 513 lb-ft of torque, but for short amounts of time, they can “Boost” to 564 horsepower and 543 lb-ft.

The Extreme costs $68,999 before government or local subsidies and the U.S. delivery fee, which has yet to be announced because the car is made in Austria. Before rebates and costs, the base Fisker Ocean Sport model starts at $37,499 and has a single electric engine in the back that can go 250 miles. On Instagram, Henrik Fisker said that shipping of the Launch Edition models would start in the U.S. by the end of June this year.
