Porsche has put Apple Maps’ directions for EV chargers into American Taycan cars. Taycan drivers who use Apple Maps and Apple CarPlay can now see where chargers are on the map. The technology could instantly suggest stations along a route based on the vehicle’s battery level, where the charger is, and how long it will take to charge. Porsche has made it so that Taycan cars sold in the United States can use Apple Maps to find charging stations. This gives CarPlay users another reason to stick with the program. The Porsche native charging planner was already in the car, and it may suggest stops based on things like the car’s state of charge (SOC), predicted traffic conditions, and average speed. In reality, most owners like third-party apps like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto better. A Porsche spokesman said that the Taycan does come with Android Auto, but it doesn’t have the new CarPlay system’s integration of the EV’s state of charge and ideas for where to stop and charge. With the new link, Taycan owners won’t have to give up CarPlay or depend on the built-in navigation system to plan charging stops. The Apple system can do many of the same quality-of-life tasks as the original system, such as analyzing the state of charge, predicting traffic, and tracking elevation changes along a particular route. This makes it easier to figure out how much energy is being used. Porsche says that if you let your car’s SOC drop below a certain level, the new software will instantly guide you to the closest charging station. CarPlay and the car’s information are needed for the system to work. So, the usual Apple Maps app on your phone will no longer tell you how to charge your phone similarly. Taycan should work with the setup, but Porsche says cars made before 2021 will need a free software update at a service centre. Porsche also put setup directions and questions about the software on this page.
