There’s this strange Russian electric car concept that keeps showing up on X and Reddit. It’s supposed to be called the “Amber.” The Autopian says that the ugly design of the machine comes from a study at Moscow Polytechnic University, which is making an electric car for the Russian market. The fact that the blob made it through the render step and is now real in the metal shows that they were successful. I have to ask, though, why this is the case; how it is made needs to make more sense. Why does the floor start above the wheels, and why is there a huge step between the door and the ground, making it so tall? How does the big hole on the front right fender relate to anything? It looks like thieves in protected trucks could shoot through those holes to get in. In the back, you can see another hole that looks like it holds a gas cap. A place to charge? It looks like someone stole the windshield, side mirrors, A-pillars, and B-pillars from another car. The back of the car looks like a panel van, and its two circular headlights make it look like it’s not supposed to be there. There is a sound that you might hear that says, “Kill me now.” According to World News Today, the Amber is a Russian car that has very few parts that are visible from the outside. Almost certainly, all of the parts that were leased came from China. Because Russia is under so many sanctions, that seems more like a must than an ideal goal. Because of this, the electric motor, batteries, and other parts are likely made in Russia. Avtotor says that the Amber will start being made in 2025. The only thing we know for sure about the Amber is that it looks like it went into the same acid vat as the Joker and came out to look worse. It has a big battery pack, but we need to know what kind it is because of the height of the ride and what looks like a battery box at the bottom. We are still determining how much power it will have, what kind of electric motors it will have, or how many wheels it will have. I don’t have high hopes, though, because the style is all over the place. I like strange, ugly cars like the Nissan S-Cargo and the Fiat Multipla because they are so different from each other that they are interesting and have their personality. But I really feel bad about this. It’s not a surprise that Amber is making a lot of noise in Ukrainian media. Some part of me wishes it never came to the United States, but I have to drive it today.
