The Sultan of Brunei’s garage might be the most interesting of all the garages owned by the world’s richest people. There are different opinions on what the collection really has and how it is right now. At its peak, it was said to have between 3,000 and 7,000 cars, with too many dream cars from the 1980s and 1990s, like eleven Ferrari F40s and ten McLaren F1s. Few cars have been able to get away from the Sultan, like this amazing 1986 Lamborghini LM002 SUV that will be auctioned off on SBX Cars in August. That’s about all the information we have about it.

The LM002 was made from 1986 to 1993 and has a 5.2L V12 engine from the Countach and a military-style frame. Some people, especially Urus owners, call it Lamborghini’s first SUV. But it’s mostly an open-bed truck. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah knew better, so he asked coachbuilder Salvatore Diomante to turn his LM002 into the first Lambo SUV, which had a closed wagon body style and a raised roof. In this case, it makes sense that you’d be the only one driving up to Cars & Coffee. All three are said to have been built, but no one knows where the other two are now. The sign also says that this is the only change that Lamborghini has agreed to in writing. Do you care about provenance?

Amidst fierce competition, the LM002 stands out as a true embodiment of the 1980s spirit. This vehicle, a testament to the era’s excesses, is a unique blend of a military concept truck, a supercar V12 engine, a leather and wood cabin, and a top speed of 130 mph. It is one of the five most powerful production cars of the decade, boasting 444 horsepower. Its weight, at about 6,700 pounds, adds to its historical significance.

The SUV add-on makes this one bigger, but the inside is nicer and has more space. In the second row, a fancy center desk with a TV, VCR, and DVD player was added later. Beautiful. There is a U-shaped bench and some basic speakers in the cargo room. The leather seats have small cracks in them, but the item is in great shape otherwise. It has also held up well on the outside, with only a few small dents and bubbles and a new coat of paint in the current Argento Metallizzato color. It has been serviced for a long time and is said to be in great driving shape, even though it still has its original 345-width tires on it, which would cost a lot of money to replace. It is said that a new set is included.

One of the most interesting or sad things about the Sultan’s car collection is that it is said to be shrinking over time. Since the sultanate apparently couldn’t afford to keep its huge fleet after a financial crisis in the late 1990s, rumors of Ferrari and Bugatti garages going bad have been going around. A thousand kilometers was all the Sultan drove in the LM002 before he sold it to Bernd Pischetsrieder, who used to be the CEO of BMW and Volkswagen. The car was then sold by Pischetsrieder to its current owner in 2009. The owner is a Swedish woman who drove her kids to school, so the car is in pretty good shape. This is a normal thing to do. Their old SUV will be sold at sale on August 7.
