When the new Volkswagen Golf R 333 comes out on May 31, it will give the all-wheel-drive hot hatchback a beautiful gold paint job and better speed. A quick look only shows a few details, but it offers some of the changes VW made. The most obvious difference is the gold paint, which looks much more expensive than the Golf R, which only comes in a few coolers. The black mirror caps at the bottom of the doors on either side are decorated with unique pictures. There is also a set of the company’s 19-inch Estoril wheels and blue brake calipers. Volkswagen also put an Akrapovic exhaust system with four tips and a shiny finish on the Golf R 333 Limited Edition cars. That will, without a doubt, sound great. Even though this is all VW has said about it so far, its name gives us more information about what we might expect. Last year, VW released many different versions of a special edition Golf R 20 Years car in many foreign markets. In Europe, the 2.0-liter turbo-four engine in the anniversary model made 328 hop and 310 lo-fi of torque. When measured in German Pferdestarke, this power goes up to 333 PS, which is a nice round number. So, it’s not too much to hope that the Golf R 333 will have an engine with the same tune. So, the Golf R 333 will share the title of being the most powerful Golf model up to this point. The high-output engine will likely be paired with a six-speed manual transmission or VW’s dual-clutch automatic gearbox. However, VW may only sell one powertrain as part of the package. 20-year-old cars with similar interests can go from 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds. Whether or not VW brings the Golf R 333 to the U.S., let’s hope we don’t get another version like the 20 Years cars that are less good. VW will likely stop making the ICE-powered Golf after the eighth generation, so this could be one of our last chances to get a real limited-edition hot car.
