• The old auction record for a Ferrari was broken by this car.
  • In races, it is the only 1962 GTO that Scuderia Ferrari has driven.
  • The sale took place on November 13, 2023, at RM Sotheby’s in New York.

There is a new, expensive Ferrari called the 250 GTO. This one from 1962 was just bought by RM Sotheby’s for $51,705,000. Previous high-profile Ferrari sales have not done as well, such as the $48.4 million 250 GTO Monterey sale in 2018, the $35.8 million 1957 335S ex-Stirling Moss sale in 2016, and the $38 million 250 GTO Monterey sale in 2014.

There was a 1962 330 LM/250 GTO that went for the most money

Based on what Sotheby’s says, this latest car is a 330 LM/250 GTO. It is the only 1962 GTO that Scuderia Ferrari ran. In May 1962, the car’s first race, the Nürburgring 1000 KM, saw it finish first overall and first in its class.

The bigger 4.0-liter engine has only been used in this one, 250 GTO. The old 3.0-liter engine was swapped out for a 4.0-liter V-12 for the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car crashed early in the race because it got too hot, so it was a DNF. After that, an Italian pirate bought the car, and Maranello switched out the 4.0-liter engine for a 3.0-liter V-12 engine and a five-speed transmission. Today, this engine is still used in cars.

The Ferrari came to the United States in 1967. Several long-term owners, including the seller, who has had the car for 38 years, have shown it off at events over the past few decades. All of these things definitely played a part in the sale price.
