• Nissan has given hints about a new Frontier car resembling the famous Hardbody truck from the 1980s and 1990s.
  • On September 14, the Hardbody version will be released, but some of its functions may have already been seen.
  • The Project Hardbody concept car was shown for the first time at the 2022 Chicago auto show. It had a higher ride height, knobby tires wrapped around vintage-style wheels, and a sport bar.

Old cars are fun to look at. The 1980s and 1990s Nissan Hardbody truck was one of the coolest, and the new Nissan Frontier will get a particular version based on it. Even though Nissan only showed us sample pictures today, we may already know what the real thing will look like. The details of the car will be made public on September 14.

A plan has come into being

Nissan showed off the Project Hardbody idea at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show. It is based on the Desert Runner version of the first pickup truck. The idea had a higher ride height, BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires on what look like the same wheels as the originals, and a red paint job that was similar to the original Hardbody.

The plan includes a front skid plate, black over-fenders, and a sports bar with two LEDs. The front doors have black “4×4” stickers, and an extra tire is put in the bed. But we think the 2024 Frontier Hardbody model will look much like the concept based on the truck’s glossy black front fascia, deep tread pattern, and black hood decal, which Nissan left out of the teaser image they shared today.

The details about the next Frontier are still unknown. Still, it will likely have the same naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V-6 engine with 310 horsepower and a nine-speed automatic gearbox as the current Frontier. We wouldn’t be shocked if the Hardbody-inspired model were built on the Pro-4X platform, meaning it would start at around $37K. The following week, we’ll find out more.
