• This is a very old Japanese car that you may need to learn more about.
  • Japan bought a lot of the light and quick Bellett type from the early 1960s to the early 1970s.
  • This sample from the last year has been changed to reflect the right period.

Most people today may only know Isuzu as a company that makes buses and cars. If you are older, you may remember the fake salesman “Joe Isuzu” who twisted reality to try to help famous people like the Trooper. But in its almost 100 years of history, Isuzu (whose name means “fifty bells”) has made a number of poorly received passenger cars.

This morning's find is a 1973 Isuzu Bellett 1800 GT. Bring a trailer

Bring A Trailer, which is part of Hearst Autos and also sells Invoice pricing, has this one for sale. This is a 1973 Isuzu Bellett that has been updated in a way that fits the period. There will only be one of these in town if you win the auction. It looks like a skinny mix between a Mazda Cosmo and a Datsun 510.

Isuzu permitted the Rootes Group in the UK to build the Hillman Imp before the Bellett. The Bellett, a small rear-engine car that came out in 1963, was a lot like a current VW, but the Imp was a lot trickier. The sportier GT model had disc brakes on the front wheels, rear-wheel drive, and fully independent suspension.

This later model GT had an 1800cc single-overhead-cam four-cylinder engine that the makers said had 113 horsepower. There is a BMW 2002tii that costs more than that, but the Bellett is 200 pounds lighter. Aside from that, this car was more exciting if it had a performance exhaust and two Mikuni side draft carburetors. RS Watanabe performance alloy wheels are the chef’s best wheels, and the suspension has been lowered. At that time, the best wheels for racing were RS Watanabes, which are Japan’s version of the famous Minilite wheels.

The inside of this little car is very classy, with a three-spoke wheel and a shift knob made of hardwood for the four-speed gearbox. Checkered floor mats finish off the theme.

Recently, the water pump, battery, and spark plugs were replaced, and the rear brake pistons were rebuilt. The car is being sold with a title from New Hampshire, but no one knows the exact miles.

If you bring this Isuzu to the neighborhood auto show, people will ask you questions about it all morning. A million-dollar Toyota 2000GT is the only car that could be cooler than this Japanese scene-stealing car. You can be the first person to own this cute little Isuzu, even if you didn’t know about it before. On January 31, the sale will end.
