• A lot of early electric cars, like the Mars II Electric, still need to be discovered.
  • Based on the Renault R10, there are only 45 of them.
  • Even though it’s just a project car, this one could become a really hot restaurant.

The past was exciting, and the future will be too. The battery packs may lose their ability to hold a charge over time, but the rest of an electric engine lasts a very long time. There are many ways that early electric cars are unique and different. This history piece is interesting for everyone, whether they drive a Tesla Model Y or like old French cars. You could reach Mars before Elon.

Today on Bring a Trailer, we're showing off this 1968 antique electric car

Electric Fuel Propulsion (EFP), a company based in Detroit, is said to make 45 cars, such as this Mars II Electric that is being auctioned off on Bring A Trailer, a site owned by Hearst Autos that also owns Invoice Pricing. EFP was one of the first companies to make electric cars, and it now operates as Apollo Energy Systems, a company that makes fuel cells and batteries. In the 1960s, it was the first electric car on the market. Later, the company made the Electrosport, which was like the AMC Hornet but ran on electricity. The public was still getting ready, which was a shame.

The older Mars II Electric was mostly given to utility companies, while the Electrosport was made to be mass-produced. Some of its great features are that it can go 120 miles on a single charge, reach fast speeds, and charge to 80% at 50 kW in 45 minutes. In 1968, the Mars II was one of the first cars to be able to do regenerative braking.

Robert Aronson, the founder of EFP, drove a Mars II on a number of well-known road trips while also working with utility companies to set up charging sites. Even though the fuel crisis in the 1970s happened later, combustion power was still easier to get and cheaper than the first way. Even though they were still very specialized, the Mars, Electrosport, and other EFP electric car concepts were still ahead of their time.

Four of the original 26-volt batteries are still there, but the project is no longer being used. The Renault R10, which is an interesting car in and of itself, was used as a base for EFP to build the cars. It is a real piece of history because it is an electric car from before people went to the moon.

The only place it can happen is a museum, though. Now that more old cars have been turned into electric vehicles, there are many chances to bring life back to Mars. A shop like EV West, which mostly works on projects for VW and Porsche, could make something special by putting together a new electric engine that smokes tires with a lithium battery pack bought from Tesla. The R10 is perfect for this kind of update because it has a rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive.

Mars II will soon land on a new pad because the no-reserve time ends on June 19. With some work, this clever EV might finally arrive in the future, as predicted a long time ago.
