• Cosworth is known for crafting some of the finest engines in the world—here’s one wrapped in a sensible, practical package.
  • This rare Ford Sierra Cosworth elevates the brand’s European family sedan to a whole new level.
  • This one is in Texas, and unlike many imported Cossie Fords, it features the steering wheel on the correct (left) side.

Some of the most expensive and rare cars in the world have Cosworth engines. The Bugatti Super Sport. The Valkyrie from Aston Martin. The V-12-powered T.50 was made by Gordon Murray. Each one is very quick, very appealing, and, sadly, very expensive. You also need a car with four doors for the kids. What if, though, that sedan had the heart of a supercar?

Today's Bring A Trailer Find Is A 1989 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS

Bring a Trailer, a division of Hearst Autos has this 1989 Ford Sierra for sale. It has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine from Cosworth, who are known as the defenders of the flame.

Cosworth has been around since the early days of Formula One and has also been known to make European Fords run faster. The Escort Cosworth and Sierra Cosworth are star cars on the other side of the Atlantic. Cars brought into the United States are usually right-hand drive because Cosworth and many “Cossie” Ford fans are based in the United Kingdom. The wheel and pump are on the left, as you would expect, since this one comes from Italy.

This Sierra should be a car instead of a coupe. The four-door model may surprise other drivers because it is hard to find and doesn’t stand out. “Is that a Merkur?” “Why on earth is that tempo so ridiculously fast?”

Under that plain white hood is the solution: a 2.0-liter inline-four engine with a redhead from the YB-Series. With the original turbocharger, this engine made 204 horsepower and 205 pound-feet of torque. However, racers and tuners could make it more powerful by adding more boosts. Luckily, this one hasn’t been changed and still has the standard five-speed manual gearbox that sends power to the back wheels. The mileage readout says 55K miles.

The light gray interior is all business. The leather Recaro seats and thick-rimmed three-spoke wheels are the only things that make it look sporty. Even though the stereo isn’t working, a YB makes a very clear yowl. Just roll down the windows and tap the gas key a few times.
