Most people who know about cars think the 1970s were a lousy time for speed. A “muscle” car must have some “muscle” or moving power. However, after 1971, horsepower almost completely disappeared because of things out of the auto industry’s control. After 1971, performance nerds could say that the 1970s were over, but the performance of looks continued. If you miss the luxury coupes built for speed in the 1970s, you might be tempted to look at these cars again. Because of their wide engine bays and standard front-engine, V-8, and rear-drive layout, they are well-designed and also easy to customize. Even though no one would have called them “muscle cars” at the time, the first signs of what would later be called “true performance” started to show up near the end of the decade. They have become popular places to create some very creative projects. Are these muscle cars for real? You’ll have to decide if you want to or not!
