• In an interview with Autocrat, Toyota’s new CEO, Koji Sato, said there could be more GR speed models.
  • Sato said that his predecessor, Akio Toyoda, now the company’s chairman, would be in charge of growing the Gazebo Racing name.
  • There are few details about the new Toyota cars that will be called GR, but there are reports that one will be a light sports car.

We at Car and Driver like cars that go fast. This is why we’re so excited about Toyota’s comeback, aimed at car enthusiasts. The recent release of several Gazebo Racing cars, such as the exciting GR Corolla hot hatch and the formidable GR86 sports sedans, is proof of this. So, when we hear from across the pond that the company will supposedly give us more of something good, it makes us very happy.

The new CEO of Toyota, Koji Sato, told the British newspaper Autocrat that future Toyota cars would have the GR name. He also gave the impression that their progress would be sped up and that his boss, Akio Toyoda, now the company’s chairman, might help this happen.

As president, our Master Driver ran the company and drove Gao simultaneously. Since he is only chairman for now, he may have more time to develop car ideas. Sato tells Autocrat.

Even though Toyota’s plans to grow the GR brand might seem straightforward, it’s good to hear Sato say it out loud. Since the company has reorganized and changed its product plan, it may affect models made for enthusiasts, like those made by Gao Racing.

We are still determining what these new GR models will be right now. Rumor has it that Toyota and Suzuki are working together on a new, light, gas-powered racing car similar to the above Toyota racing EV. GR efficiency improvements are also said to be coming to the electric Toyota bZ4X SUV. It isn’t impossible that there could be a GR Camry.
