Older Tesla Model 3s in Hertz’s fleet are being sold at a big discount. You have to think about whether you would buy one for $14,000 even if it had been leased before. Hertz had agreed to buy 100,000 Tesla cars from Tesla, but for a variety of reasons, the company has put off adopting EVs. In a results call that CNBC reported, the company said that the move was due to high repair costs and recent price cuts on new Tesla cars. The launch of the “Highland” facelift for the 2024 Model 3 may have also played a role in Hertz’s choice to file for bankruptcy. Hertz is getting rid of extra Teslas right now, and they’re selling them for less than half of what they cost new. On its Rent2Buy page, Hertz lists cars for as little as $17,800. According to a screenshot that Electrek shared, these cars can be bought. The net cost drops to $13,800 when the $4,000 federal tax credit for used electric cars is taken into account. Because the cheapest cars displayed had already been sold, the lowest price we could find was $20,500 at the time of publication. The amount is only $16,500, though, when the tax credit is added in. There is a strong value case for buying an EV here, no matter how you look at it. Yes, these were rentals at first, so it’s clear that everyone who touched them was mean. Also, because they are Teslas, the insides look like Tupperware, fixes cost a lot, and other drivers might think you’re into questionable supplements and The Joe Rogan Experience if you drive one.
