Unexpected rain during the 2023 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix made it look like the race would end more excitingly than imagined. Even though the rain made things more exciting, Max Verstappen of Red Bull took first place on the podium. However, it’s hard to argue with his clear win because he had to drive very well.

Most of the Monaco Grand Prix was won by Verstappen and Fernando Alonso in an Aston Martin. After the first few laps, Alonso was in third place. He was way ahead of cars in the rotation and didn’t lose any position when he stopped for gas. Even though it was expected to rain at some point during the race, most teams thought it would just be a few light sprinkles. But on lap 55, it started to rain very hard, which caused some uncertainty. As they slid and slid around the famous street track, the drivers struggled to keep their cars on the road. Lance Stroll of Aston Martin was the only driver to give up in the rain, which was a surprise.

Fans missed a more exciting ending because Aston Martin’s plan for changing tires was too optimistic. Just before it started to rain intensely, Alonso and Verstappen still used their original hard and medium tires. Verstappen was still driving on dangerously worn medium tires on the wet track when Aston Martin switched Alonso to a tire with more grip. When Alonso stopped for medium wet tires, Verstappen had to switch to intermediate rain tires because it started raining heavily. Alonso was disadvantaged immediately because he had to pit again for intermediate tires. This time, he was 20 seconds behind Verstappen. After that, Verstappen did an excellent job with the conditions and kept and even grew his lead over Alonso.

Alonso asked the team if they could switch to intermediate rain tires after Aston Martin told him to stop for medium rain tires. If they had done that, Alonso might have been able to pass Verstappen and take the lead.

Verstappen, on the other hand, deserves this win more than anyone else. Even though it was very slippery, the Dutchman did an excellent job keeping his grip. Even though Verstappen hit the wall a lot, he ended almost 30 seconds ahead of Alonso, who came in second.

A few other important things happened at the Monaco Grand Prix this year. Esteban Ocon of Alpine came in third, the team’s first podium finish of the year. Sergio Perez of Red Bull came in 17th place after hitting other cars early in the race and being briefly passed by Max Verstappen.

In Monaco, the race is only sometimes exciting because drivers can’t pass each other. This makes some parts of the race boring to watch. Verstappen showed why his car is better than everyone else’s, even though tire problems and late rain caused the drivers to give it their all.
