For people who really like Volkswagens, the letters “GTI” have a special meaning. It’s been almost 50 years since the first Golf GTI was shown at the Frankfurt car show. But when electric cars come out, VW fans will have to change their name. The ID.3 GTX is the brand’s first electric hot hatch, and the ID.7 GTX Tourer is its sporty electric wagon. They will never set foot on American land, which is a shame.

VW shows off the 335-HP ID.7 GTX Wagon and the 322-HP ID.3 GTX EV Hot Hatch

VW has already talked about the 2021 European GTX versions of the ID.4 crossover and the ID.5 coupe SUV. These will both use the same dual-motor engine as the ID.4s with all-wheel drive in the US. The new ID.3 GTX and ID.7 GTX Tourer, on the other hand, are the first fast electric Volkswagens that really stole our hearts thanks to their unique hatchback and wagon body styles.

GTI Electric Follow-Up

The ID.3 GTX comes in two different styles. The power output goes from 282 horsepower to 322 horsepower in the Performance version. This means that the permanent synchronous motor produces more power than the Golf R’s electric Performance model and the base GTI that runs on gas. The GTX models are both rear-wheel drive and have 402 pound-feet of power. Volkswagen says that the standard GTX will take 6.0 seconds to hit 62 mph, while the Performance model will do it in 5.6 seconds. Based on our tests of the faster gas-powered Golfs, these numbers are low. The two EV types can go as fast as 111 and 124 mph, respectively.

A 79.0-kWh battery is placed in the middle of the floor to make sure that the weight is spread out evenly. The ID.3 GTX can charge at up to 175 kW when hooked up to a DC fast charger. This means that the battery can go from 10% to 80% in as little as 26 minutes. Volkswagen thinks the range will be about 373 miles using the WLTP test run, which is more optimistic in Europe.

The GTX version is different from the ID.3s because it has a new front plate with a boomerang-shaped running light and a black air intake. The outer trim and the new rear diffuser are also gloss black, and the 20-inch wheels that come standard look great. While the regular GTX tires have 215s, the Performance GTX tires have 235s. Red stitching on the steering wheel and sports seats makes the inside of the GTX look better. At the same time that the GTX came out, a better entertainment system with a 12.9-inch tablet also came out.

Long and Strong

The ID.7 GTX Tourer’s transmission is much more powerful. It has two motors that send 335 horsepower to each of the four wheels. The front axle has an asynchronous motor with 108 horsepower, and the rear axle has the same fixed synchronous motor with 282 horsepower that is in the ID.3 GTX. The fastest speed allowed is 112 miles per hour, but no details on acceleration were given.

This is the ID.7 GTX battery. It can hold 86.0 kWh of power and be charged at up to 200 kW. Volkswagen says it should take less than 30 minutes to charge the battery from 10% to 80%. Even though it didn’t say how far it could go, the extra power and all-wheel drive should make it less than the ID.7 Tourer’s WLTP estimate of 426 miles, even though the battery is bigger.

The bumper style on the ID.7 GTX Tourer is the same as the one on the ID.3 GTX. Both cars have 20-inch wheels and gloss black trim. The inside also gets some improvements, like heated front seats with red stitching and seats with more support. The doors, dash, and steering wheel are all tastefully stitched in red.

Volkswagen’s ID.3 GTX and ID.7 GTX Tourer will be sold in Europe this year, but for now, we’ll have to look at these powerful electric cars from afar. The ID.7 car will come to the US this year, but not the wagon. The company has yet to say if it plans to bring the little ID.3 here or not.
