• Since 1982, the Worthersee GTI Treffen has been held yearly, and up to 200,000 people have gone.
  • The event occurred in the Austrian town of Worth, which said earlier this year that the gathering would no longer happen.
  • VW has been the official sponsor of the Treffen since 2000, and the company has now promised to keep the tradition going at its headquarters in Wolfsburg.

If you like any version of the Volkswagen GTI, Germany is the place to be. Since 1982, the GTI Treffen has been held on the shores of Lake Worth. Any VW hot hatch fan should put going there on their list of things to do. At its height, tens of thousands of GTI and Golf R fans came to this spot to take pictures of overly customized Golfs and eat a lot of Volkswagen currywurst (VW part number 199398500A). But, as expected, the people in the area are getting tired of the show.

Even though past Treffens had brought money to the area, the local government decided to cancel the biggest GTI festival in the world. According to an official statement, the city of Maria Worth will only hold formal significant vehicle events in the coming years. This is because of the effects of climate change and the need to think about sustainability.

This was a letdown for both VeeDub fans and VW. Even though VW has helped its fans for a long time, the Treffen started as a small event. It made its debut.

The Vision for the GTI Roadster Gran Turismo is a beautiful two-seater car without a roof. It was made to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Gran Turismo racing video games. Who could forget the crazy GTI W12-650, which had a 12-cylinder engine in the middle and could go as fast as 201 mph? But that no longer holds. Worthersee, a beautiful resort town in Bavaria’s lake area, will return to how it used to be.

Volkswagen quickly said the Treffen would still happen but would be in Wolfsburg. VW has chosen the theme “Coming Home” for the event the following year. Volkswagen has said that GTI fans can look forward to surprises and extra features.

This is the best thing that came out of the Treffen. With so many people, it had outgrown its first place. Moving the festival to Wolfsburg is a better idea, and giving Volkswagen a year to plan gives them more time to do so.

The Golf R and GTI continue to get near-perfect scores for how easy they are to use and how well they perform, and they still have a lot of fans. If you’ve been putting it off, you should go to the Treffen in 2024.
