• The 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4X and Extreme AEV Edition are the heavy-duty models that can go off-road the best for the brand.
  • The suspension on the AT4X is higher, and it has modern spool-valve shock absorbers, 35-inch mud-terrain tires, and safety skid plates.
  • The Extreme AEV Edition has unique 18-inch wheels, more full skid plates, and eye-catching steel bumpers from AEV, a company that sells extra parts.

Jack is a kid who never plays, so he is always bored. Unless Jack is driving a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4X or Extreme AEV Edition, the company’s most off-road-friendly heavy-duty models. The new AT4X and its AEV-enhanced cousin are just as capable as most other 3/4-ton Sierras, with a towing capacity of up to 18,500 pounds and a payload capacity of up to about 3,300 pounds. They also have the comforts you need for more fun after work.

In contrast to the Sierra 1500, made for dirt and came out for the 2022 model year, the Sierra HD got the AT4X logo in the 2024 model year. Before, the standard AT4, available on the 2500HD and the 3500HD, was the best off-road choice for heavy-duty pickup trucks. The new AT4X is only for 2500HD trucks with crew cab bodies and standard-length cargo beds.

The Sierra 2500HD AT4X is set up like the new Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD ZR2 for 2024, which just came out. Both cars have black 18-inch wheels with 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory M/T tires. The new Multimatic DSSV spool-valve shocks help the 1.5-inch-higher suspension on the AT4X. Professional race cars and trucks also use these high-tech shocks. They have three different spool valves, making them more durable off-road and stable on-road.

The front suspension of the 2024 Sierra 2500HD AT4X has been changed to have better steering knuckles and unique upper and lower control arms. The truck’s underside is better protected from damage with an aluminium front bash plate and a more giant steel transfer case skid plate. The AT4X package also has an automatically lockable rear differential and an “Off-Road” drive mode to help you navigate rugged terrain.

Customers can choose between a standard gas-powered 6.6-liter V-8 with 401 hp or an extra diesel-powered 6.6-liter V-8 with 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque. Both need a 10-speed Allison automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive.

An AT4X Extra Extreme

The AT4X and less powerful heavy-duty Sierras don’t have the extreme hardware only offered in the ominously named Extreme AEV Edition. It is an AT4X version made more robust with extra parts from AEV. Powerful off-road cars have steel-stamped front and back bumpers with winch mounts and recovery points. Complete the set with 18-inch gloss-black wheels for AEVs and better underbody protection.

From a technical point of view, there are a few minor changes between the AT4X and the Extreme AEV Edition. Both cars leave the ground at an angle of 25.7 degrees and have a ground clearance of 11.6 to 11.7 inches. The SUV has a break-over angle of 21.2 degrees, while the AEV has a break-over angle of 22.6 degrees. The AT4X has a higher approach angle of 31.6 degrees instead of 29.8 degrees. GMC says that the changes to the AEV have added 378 pounds to the weight of both the gas-powered and the oil-powered models.

The AT4X and Extreme AEV Edition are helped by the significant changes GMC made to the Sierra HD line for 2024, like a better design and a sexier interior. They also have excellent features like a head-up display, a 13.4″ touchscreen in the centre, and a 12.3″ digital instrument panel. Each type comes with high-end features like leather inside, natural wood on the inside, front massage seats, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system.

The 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4X and Extreme AEV Edition will go into production this fall. GMC hasn’t said how much either choice will cost, but the introductory price will be around $90,000, with an extra $8,000 for the AEV-enhanced model.
