Our Opinion - 2025 Ford Ranger Review

The Ford Ranger, which was redesigned for the 2024 model year, will go into 2025 with only a few small changes. There are still only two engine choices for the mid-size pickup: a 315-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 and a standard 270-horsepower turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder. It only comes in a crew cab with a five-foot bed. You can get both with either four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive and an automatic engine with 10 speeds. The high-performance Ranger Raptor is available for buyers who want real off-road capability built in at the factory; we look at that model individually. The Ranger looks a lot like the full-size F-150 from the outside, and the inside can be as fancy or simple as you want. The more expensive top-of-the-line Lariat has more leather, tech, and entertainment choices. The Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Toyota Tacoma, the Ranger’s main rivals, have all recently gotten similar improvements, so buyers will need to think about their other options. The new Ranger may be the best it has ever been. If you want to know which car is the best in its class for 2025, check out the Ford Ranger.

In 2025, the Ranger will likely get some small changes. The colors Cactus Gray, Iconic Silver, and Hot Pepper Red are being phased out so that Ruby Red Metallic, Desert Sand, and Marsh Gray can be used instead. There is also a Black Appearance package.

Pros

  • Very strong V6 engines.
  • There is equipment for big screens.
  • A lot of choices, features, and trims.

Cons

  • It was possible to carry more on the Old Ranger.
  • Exterior style that you can’t trust.
  • Not as good as the Chevy Colorado?

The base Rangers have a 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 270 horsepower, which is more than enough to move the mid-size truck around. The more expensive models have a 2.7-liter V-6 twin-turbo engine that makes 315 horsepower. Both come with a 10-speed automatic gearbox and can have either four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. When we tested the 2024 Ranger, we liked how it moves more comfortably and is more stable on the road than the last generation of trucks. However, we didn’t like how the steering felt foggy. The extra V-6 engine is appealing to us because it has a lot of power and is well worth the money.

The Ranger comes with basic driving assistance features. To get access to more advanced technologies, you can move up to a higher trim level or buy an option package. The prices for the option packages are fair for people who want these tools. The following are important safety features:

  • Automated emergency braking and conventional forward collision warning.
  • Rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring are offered.
  • You can get adaptive speed control.

The Ranger’s interior is more modern, with air vents that look like honeycombs, a digital gauge display, and textured panel trim. The Lariat has a B&O quality sound system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, power-adjustable leather-trimmed seats, and many other features that make it very comfortable. Most of the truck’s buttons and settings were turned into digital ones when the infotainment system was added. Ford built a lot of storage space into the Ranger’s interior. There are large door pocket cubbies, a secret top glovebox in the dashboard, and space under the back seat. The SuperCrew crew cab is the only body type available right now. It has four doors and a room for five people.

The EPA says that the four-cylinder Ranger gets 21 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway when it has rear-wheel drive. These numbers drop by 1 mpg when it has four-wheel drive. The Ranger’s V-6 engine gets 23 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city. When we drove the V-6 Ranger on the highway at 75 mph, it got 20 mpg.

The standard infotainment screen is 10.1 inches, but tech-savvy buyers can get an upgrade to a 12-inch screen that is positioned vertically. Ford’s newest Sync 4 interface, which works with both iPhone and Android, lets you access the Ranger’s many controls. For example, the zone-lighting feature turns on lights on the outside of the truck to light up a job site or help you finish setting up camp in the dark. All versions also come with either an 8.0-inch or a 12.4-inch digital gauge display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard, and you can add SiriusXM satellite radio and in-dash mapping if you want to.

In our studies, a Lariat with four cylinders went from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. The Ranger could go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds with its new twin-turbo V-6 engine. For the best performance and off-road fun, think about the wild Ranger Raptor, which we will talk about independently.

No matter which engine you choose, the Ranger can pull up to 7500 pounds. However, when the four-wheel-drive system is added, the truck can only carry 1711 pounds instead of 1805 pounds like rear-wheel-drive types.

The Lariat is definitely a luxury car, especially for a mid-size pickup truck. However, at the price point, it’s about the same as a full-size pickup truck. We’d choose the mid-range XLT because it has a good set of features and costs less. 17-inch aluminum wheels, power-folding side view mirrors, in-dash navigation, wireless smartphone charging, LED exterior lighting, and a power plug in the truck bed are all features that people want. Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite of driver-assistance technologies is also built-in. These include blind-spot tracking, lane-keeping assist, and rear parking sensors. The Technology Package, which has front parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, and adaptive speed control, is another option we think about.
