This fast sedan was made for rallying and comes in basic, Premium, limited, and GT trims. It has a 271-horsepower turbocharged flat-four engine. You already know that this is a normal car. There is a six-speed manual transmission as standard, but a CVT automatic transmission is available on the GT and most trim levels. It’s not as similar to the Impreza small as it used to be; the new WRX has a strong, lively personality. The Hyundai Elantra N and the Toyota GR Corolla are competitors that can match or even beat the WRX’s boy-racer attitude. However, the current WRX has toned down some of its noise in an effort to be more refined. What's New? Subaru raised the bar for speed in 2024 by releasing a new WRX TR model that can only be bought with a manual transmission. In 2025, Subaru will turn up the heat even more. The TR will be replaced by the WRX tS, which stands for “tuned by STI” and should make any car fan’s heart race. It has newer suspension, better brakes, and some small changes to the way it looks. Pros and Cons Pros STI changed the tS model. A ride that is smooth and easy. It comes with a manual gearbox. Cons Low economy with fuel. Not very interesting. WRX STI: Where is it? Engine, Transmission, and Performance The WRX has a 2.4-liter flat-four turbocharged engine that makes 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The GT comes with an all-wheel drive, a continuously variable automatic transmission (which is optional on the Premium and Limited), and a six-speed manual gearbox. No matter what type you buy, the WRX comes with either 17- or 18-inch summer tires. The tS is meant to be better than the TR, and it has a new suspension system with changeable dampers and better Brembo brakes with bigger pads and rotors. Subaru says the changes make the car safer to stop, make the pedals feel better, and cut down on fade. The rear spoiler, antenna, and side mirror all have black trim that makes them look better on the TS. The 19-inch shiny gray wheels and gold brake calipers make the whole thing look good. Safety Popular technologies that help drivers are available for the WRX, but they can only be used in cars with automatic transmissions. Visit the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) webpages to learn more about the WRX’s crash test scores. Some important safety factors are: It comes with automatic emergency brakes and forward collision warning systems. A lane departure indicator and lane-keeping aid are present. You can get adaptive speed control. Internal and External Cargo Capacity Other than the red contrast stitching and carbon fiber-like accents, the WRX looks a lot like other new Subaru cars. It’s flat on the bottom and has wide edges around the edges. The 60/40 split-folding device on the back seat lets you get to the trunk from inside the car. Pick the Premium trim level over the Base model if you want niceties like heated front seats, outside mirrors, and a windshield wiper deicer. The Premium trim level also has aluminum-alloy pedal covers, USB-C connections, and the opportunity to add an 11-speaker, 504-watt Harman Kardon sound system. The WRX tS has eight-way black synthetic suede Recaro bucket seats, blue accents all over the cabin, and a badge that says “WRX tS.” Fuel Economy and Actual MPG The CVT allows for slightly faster acceleration, but it gets 22 mpg on the highway compared to 21 mpg with the manual gear. On our real 75-mph highway fuel economy route, both of our test cars, the automatic WRX GT and the six-speed manual WRX Limited, got 28 mpg. Infotainment and Connectivity All trim levels have a standard 11.6-inch touchscreen for entertainment. The tS, on the other hand, has a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, while the other trims have traditional gauges. You may use it with either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Range, Charging, and Battery Life In our tests, the 2022 Subaru WRX GT with CVT reached 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, while the 2022 Subaru WRX Limited took 5.5 seconds with a manual drive. Price and How to Choose We’d rather have the WRX Premium with its six-speed manual gearbox. For less money, you can get the GT model with an automatic transmission or the hot-blooded tS. It still comes with a good selection of features, like heated front seats and keyless entry with pushbutton start. The Premium is a better choice if you want to tune the WRX’s efficiency yourself, but some people will only need the tS.
