Our Opinion - 2025 Toyota Prius PHEV Review

With its 2023 makeover, Toyota’s Prius Prime plug-in hybrid joined the cool hybrid group. It is now called the Prius PHEV, which goes well with its stylish new look for 2025. Putting the self-explanatory PHEV acronym in the name makes sense, especially since more people are learning about electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids, along with the terms used to describe them. The only thing that has changed about the 2025 Prius PHEV is its name. It still has the modern, four-door hatchback body style that comes in three trim levels, and it still has the 220-horsepower hybrid drivetrain that is made up of a 2.0-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors. The EPA says that the SE trim can go 44 miles on electricity alone. The XSE and XSE Premium trims can go 39 miles. As an affordable option, the Prius line has always been there, but the makeover in 2023 gave it a new look and made it more fun to drive, setting it apart from other small cars with different powertrains. The Toyota Prius PHEV is one of our top picks in its class, so it’s on our 2025 Editors’ Choice list.

By 2025, it will remain largely the same, but the name will change from “Prius Prime plug-in hybrid” to “Prius PHEV.”

Pros

  • The fastest Prius available.
  • Capable of all-electric driving at speeds of up to 84 mph.
  • Striking and stylish exterior design.

Cons

  • Only FWD.
  • Limited view from the back.
  • Monitor for focus with sensitivity settings.

The battery pack in the Prius PHEV lets it go up to 44 miles on power alone. On our highway fuel economy route, we drove an XSE model for 33 miles at 75 mph until the battery died and the diesel engine took over. Along with charging from a wall outlet, solar panels on the roof give the battery a little extra power while the car is stopped. The solar screens power the air conditioner and other parts of the Prius PHEV when you drive it. It’s too bad that the panels are only offered on the XSE Premium and not on the SE or XSE trims, which are cheaper.

You can get a surround-view camera and front and back parking assist systems, but Toyota has already built a lot of driver-assistance features into the Prius PHEV. The following are important safety features:

  • Most automatic emergency brakes can detect road users.
  • Standard lane departure warning and assistance to keep you in your lane.
  • It comes with adaptive speed control.

The Prius PHEV looks good on the outside and inside as well. The PHEV’s cabin shares some design cues with the bZ4X electric SUV. For example, the PHEV’s dashboard has a beautiful circular design and a big touchscreen in the middle. The group of Priuses gauges in the middle is no longer there. The 2024 model has a cluster right in front of the driver, but the steering wheel sort of hides it. The shifter for the PHEV has also been moved from the dashboard to the center panel. The low roof in the back seat makes it harder to fit your head in, but we found that the driver’s seat has just the right amount of legroom.

The EPA rates the Prius PHEV SE as getting 52 mpg in the city and on the highway when it has both electric motors and a four-cylinder engine. During our tests, we got 46 mpg on the highway.

The Prius PHEV SE and XSE models both come with an 8.0-inch tablet infotainment system as standard. The XSE model also has an optional 12.3-inch display. The top-of-the-line XSE Premium comes with a big screen and a high-end JBL sound system. No matter what trim level you choose, every Prius PHEV has six USB-C ports, Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

At our test track, the Prius PHEV reached 60 mph in 6.7 seconds with both electric and gasoline motors and in 11.2 seconds with only electric motors.

The price of the 2025 Toyota Prius PHEV could range from $34,510 to $41,205, depending on the choices and specs. There are three grades of the Prius PHEV: SE, XSE, and XSE Premium. These grades show off the car’s newfound agility. We’d choose the XSE because it has keyless entry, a controlled rear hatch, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and heated front seats. A heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot tracking, lane centering, and automatic high-beam headlights are all standard on the XSE. It also has an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
