The Range Rover has changed a lot since it came out more than 50 years ago as a two-door utility vehicle. Now, it’s a big, luxurious SUV that has become a brand name for the company. Its newest version, which came out just last year, had all-new technology, better engines, and an even fancier interior than before. One might be pardoned for supposing the old model, but the sleek and attractive look of the outside is also new. It was the first for the Range Rover to have a third row, which was the most important news.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain, which Land Rover last used in 2021, is back for 2023. Land Rover says this new model has more power and an electric range of about 48 miles. That is more than twice as much as the last plug-in Range Rover. The electric motor and the gas engine in a plug-in hybrid vehicle are powered by a small battery pack that can be charged at EV chargers. Also, Land Rover introduced a new top-tier trim called SV and said that the First Edition trim would no longer be made after 2023, even though many of its features are available on other Range Rover frames.

This market is getting increasingly crowded now that the Range Rover has a third row. The Range Rover has many of the same high-end features and accents as the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7, but both cars start at much lower prices. You can also look at SUVs like the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Lincoln Navigator, and Cadillac Escalade, which are based on trucks. They have more room for people and things, two of the Range Rover’s weak points, but none feel as luxurious.

The way the Range Rover is driven. We tested the Range Rover SE, which has a P400 engine, a long wheelbase, and seats in the third row. It is a large SUV that weighs almost 6,000 pounds. The SUV went from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds in our tests. On the other hand, it has a smooth, comfortable ride and likes to go slowly. The smooth gear changes stand out.

The Range Rover is good at going off-road because it has two locking differentials, a maximum ground clearance of more than 11 inches, and five terrain driving modes, one of which is called Wade and lets you drive through rivers. Due to its fragile exterior, off-roading may be complicated with this SUV, but its abilities are hard to beat at any price.

The way the car turns and moves is also a problem. The Range Rover’s suspension and steering are set up for comfort, which makes the body lean when turning. Some three-row luxury SUVs can stop from 60 mph in less than a second, even with solid brakes. All-wheel steering makes the back wheels rotate anticlockwise relative to the front wheels. This makes it easier to spin at low speeds. It’s functional, especially for parking.

It’s great that it can give a comfortable ride on all kinds of pavement. Our test car had 23-inch wheels, which usually make the ride less comfortable and smooth because they need low-profile tires. On the other hand, the suspension made almost all road bumps disappear.

The optional 24-way power-adjustable front seats are also impressive, and the soft padding and sturdy frames in all three rows keep passengers comfortable. The Range Rover, on the other hand, gives away its comfort with its climate control. Even though the cabin didn’t let any air in, we heard creaks and vibrations that we hadn’t heard in other luxury brands.

The Range Rover SE is great on the inside. It is easy to get in and out of because the doors are significant, there are steps, and the suspension lowers itself. That’s neat. The seats in the first two rows are roomy, but the third row is too small for adults. Also, the Range Rover has big windows that make it easier to see out of and cut down on blind spots. It has an excellent driving position that is easy to change.

Those who have driven a Range Rover before knowing what the problems are. It is hard to find and use the touchscreen buttons, controls, and commands. They might sometimes need clarification about what they’re for, be hard to find in a maze of menus, or need two or three tries to work. This common problem makes us less excited than we would be otherwise.

Voice controls, which often don’t understand what you say, are the most severe problem we’ve seen with technology. The Range Rover system is good at finding addresses but needs help finding points of interest and doesn’t work with natural language like many other systems do.

The technology of other countries is awe-inspiring. The maps and turn-by-turn directions are easy to understand and follow, and you can connect wirelessly according to whether you’re using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay preference. Prefer. Another benefit is its several modern driver’s aids, such as a quiet adaptive cruise control system. Modern cars with lane-centering steering can be annoying, but the Range Rover’s small use of it seemed smooth and helpful.

There needs to be more room for cargo in a three-row Range Rover like the one we tested. With only 8.7 cubic feet of space behind the third row, which is about half of what a Mercedes GLS has, it has less space than a Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator, both of which have bigger extended-wheelbase versions than the Range Rover. We let it slide because when the third row is folded down, it has more space than the GLS.

This car has enough power to pull most trailers and boats, with a maximum towing capacity of 7,716 pounds. (The Range Rover can carry up to 8,200 pounds of weight.) Inside, there is just enough room for personal items, but nothing stands out compared to what you might find elsewhere. Parents of young children find it easy to put car seats in their cars because the anchors are easy to use and find.

A traditional mild hybrid system is a big help for such a big, heavy car. On our 115-mile test route, the Range Rover SE got precisely the 21 mpg combined that the EPA said it would get. This number suggests a good return, but it may not be as accurate if you spend most of your time driving on city streets. For a car this size, it gets good gas mileage.

The Range Rover is expensive, but it has many fantastic, flashy features like excellent air suspension and a lot of off-road gear. That may seem like a fair deal for wealthy buyers, but the price may keep pickier buyers away. Even though it has an air of exclusivity, luxury, and style, the plastics inside were not as lovely as we had hoped. Land Rover’s basic warranty and protection for the drivetrain last for four years and 50,000 miles, which is the norm for cars in this class. Still, this is a normal thing for large, high-end SUVs to do.

Even though it’s not fun to drive, the Range Rover has a lot of presence. As you get close, the primary air suspension considerably lowers the vehicle, and the way it looks from the outside makes it look like a glacier-carved. Few cars can amaze and get people’s attention the way this one can. We recommend going at night when the glimmering lights make an already luxurious experience even better.

The Range Rover Autobiography is still the best, no matter how nice the new SV trim looks. It adds a lot of comfort and conveniences to Land Rover’s great V8 engine without making the price go crazy.
