After a long wait, the 4Runner is finally being brought up to date. As expected, the 2025 4Runner will have the same turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 278 horsepower. It will also share a base with the new Tacoma pickup truck. There is also a hybrid version with 326 horsepower, but we will talk about that one separately. Toyota has kept the traditional roll-down rear window, and the new 4Runner still looks strong, stylish, and square-jawed from the outside. Optional tech features include a head-up display, a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, a 14.0-inch infotainment tablet, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. These features make the rest of the package much better. There are also a lot of simple and advanced technologies that can help the driver. But don’t think that the 4Runner has become softer. It comes with a lot of off-road gear to help you handle any problems that come up on the trail. By the end of 2024, Toyota stores should have the redesigned 4Runner in stock. What's New? After fifteen tough years, the fifth generation of the 4Runner is no longer being made. It has been replaced by this new sixth-generation car. The model is based on the brand-new Tacoma pickup truck for 2024. It has more current features and a tougher exterior. Pros and Cons Pros There is a hybrid engine. There is a bigger screen available. A new Trailhunter trim that can go over land. Cons The third row might still need to be more crowded. We’ll need to wait until fall 2024. Engine, Transmission, and Performance All versions of the 4Runner have an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 278 horsepower. Rear-wheel drive is normal, but you can also get a full-time four-wheel drive system with a two-speed transfer case and high and low range as an option. A locking rear differential, an off-road cruise control system, and optional detachable stabilizer bars are just a few of the things that can help you get around any terrain. Hybrid cars can even have extra features for off-roading, like manually adjustable dampers, but we will talk about that model individually. Internal and External Cargo Capacity The 4Runner’s interior may look familiar because it looks a lot like the Tacoma pickup truck’s interior. Both the entertainment system and the dashboard are the same. The controls look like they would be easy for the driver to reach, and the cabin is well-designed with storage spaces. The Tacoma doesn’t have the extra third-row seat that you can get in the 4Runner. The third row should be fine for kids or people who want to ride along sometimes, but it will be too crowded for adults. The 4Runner can still be turned into a fake convertible by lowering the motorized back window, rolling down all four windows, and opening the optional sunroof. It’s not as open as a Wrangler or Ford Bronco without a roof, but it works well for people who want to enjoy the view while they ride. Infotainment and Connectivity The 2025 4Runner is mostly different from older models in terms of technology and entertainment features. The new model has better technology than the old 2024 model, which is no longer made. As standard, the car comes with an 8.0-inch tablet for entertainment that runs the newest software from Toyota. We found it to be easy to use and quick to load. A 12.3-inch digital gauge set and a larger 14.0-inch display are both available as options. All 4Runner models come with USB-C ports, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and a digital key system that lets you use an app on your phone to start, open, and lock the car. You don’t have to use a wireless charging pad for your phone. Towing and Payload Capacity The 2025 Toyota 4Runner can pull up to 6,000 pounds, which is more than many of its rivals. That’s 1000 pounds more than the previous model 4Runner and more than the Jeep Wrangler can carry. Price and How to Choose Toyota hasn’t said for sure how much the 2025 4Runner will cost, but we think it will be a little more than the 2024 model. You can buy the SR5, the Limited, and four TRD-branded trims here. But if you want the best Trailhunter trim, you have to buy a 4Runner Hybrid.
