Our Opinion - 2025 Subaru Impreza Review

The Subaru Impreza may not look the best, but it is a useful all-wheel-drive car with many safety and technology features. The best RS model replaces the 2.0-liter boxer four engine that has 152 horsepower with a 2.5-liter engine that has 182 horsepower. While neither option is very fast, the RS is more enjoyable on winding roads because it has more speed. People have missed manual gearboxes since earlier years because of the rising desire for continuous variable transmissions. The Impreza has a simple interior, and all types, except the most basic one, come with a big infotainment screen. The Toyota Prius is cheaper, has a nicer look, and offers all-wheel drive. However, the Honda Civic is more attractive and has a hybrid version that is stronger and more fuel-efficient than the Subaru. Subaru also has the Crosstrek, which is basically an Impreza with a higher ground clearance.

The Impreza has not changed for this year after being updated in 2024.

Pros

  • Affordable.
  • A nice drive that is easy to control.
  • The hatchback has useful cargo space.

Cons

  • Tires can lower sports ability.
  • Average fuel economy.
  • It’s important to reconsider the main touchscreen.

The basic and Sport variants are powered by a small 2.0-liter flat-four naturally aspirated engine that makes 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The RS version is the only model with a bigger 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine, which produces 30 more horsepower and 33 more pound-feet of torque. This brings the total to 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. The RS’s more powerful boxer engine gives better performance than the standard engine, but we wish Subaru had added a turbocharger. Even though the Impreza isn’t the strongest car available right now, its design could really benefit from a more powerful engine. All Imprezas have a CVT and torque vectoring, which enhance the great all-wheel-drive system. Subaru has made the Impreza’s chassis 10% stronger than the last model. It also features a special type of electric power steering from the WRX, which makes turning easier and adds a sporty feel.

Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is now included as standard on all three versions of the Impreza. It also comes with the recently released Safety and Security Connected Services for cars with Starlink. The RS model comes with lane-keeping aid and rear cross-traffic alert as standard features. If you choose the optional blind-spot detection system, it also includes automatic emergency steering. Key safety factors include:

  • Lane-keeping aid and adaptive cruise control come as standard features.
  • There are alerts for cross-traffic behind the vehicle and tracking for blind spots.
  • There is automatic emergency turning available.

Subaru cabins focus on being practical instead of fancy, and the new Impreza follows this trend. All models in the series have back seats that can split and fold in a 60/40 ratio, and they come with dual-zone climate control. On our first drive, we noticed that the new Impreza’s interior was quieter than the older fifth-generation model. We appreciated that the infotainment display has real buttons instead of just tablet controls, and the interior design is a smart upgrade from the last model. A useful plastic step by the back seats makes it easier to reach the roof and helps secure items on cars with roof rails. When the back seats are down, the hatchback offers a large space of 56 cubic feet for goods.

With its basic engine, the Impreza gets 27 miles per gallon in the city and 34 miles per gallon on the highway. The expected fuel efficiency for RS-trim cars with a 2.5-liter engine is 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. As part of our careful testing process, we tried the Impreza RS for fuel efficiency on a highway route at 75 mph. The car got 37 miles per gallon, which is 4 miles per gallon better than the EPA rating.

The regular Impreza has a 7.0-inch touchscreen screen. The Starlink multimedia device is included as a standard feature in the Sport and RS models. It boasts an 11.6-inch touchscreen display that controls the sound system, HVAC, and other automobile functions, as well as being wirelessly compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Subaru provides Safety and Security Connect Services. These include SOS Emergency Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Recovery Service, and Remote Vehicle Locator for cars that have Starlink. The Impreza’s auxiliary input jack, USB-C port, and USB-A port guarantee that you’re covered regardless of the smartphone you own. A 10-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system is offered, but only for the highest RS model.

In our tests, an Impreza RS went from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.8 seconds. The 2.5-liter Impreza is 1.2 seconds faster than the older 2.0-liter model.

We wanted to find out how the updated Impreza RS performs and if it would be our favorite choice because we like fast cars and have a sense of nostalgia. The bigger 2.5-liter engine is a nice upgrade from the old 2.0-liter, even if it’s not very exciting. The way the car is tuned lets you enjoy driving on winding roads. We suggest choosing the base model because it offers the best price and features for the Impreza, which is designed to give customers affordable and practical all-wheel-drive travel.
