The K20C1 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 315 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 310 pound-feet of torque between 2,600 and 4,000 rpm. Boost pressure reaches 25.2 psi. The engine revs to 7,000 rpm with a power delivery that remains linear and accessible rather than peaky, which is what makes the Type R manageable on public roads at speeds well below its limits.
The six-speed manual is the best gearbox Honda has ever installed in a production car and among the best available in any front-wheel-drive vehicle at any price. Throws are short and precise, the gate is defined without being notchy, and the standard rev-match system is calibrated to respond faster than most drivers can heel-toe independently. A Type R-exclusive shift link mechanism improves the mechanical connection between the shifter and the transmission, a detail that is noticeable in back-to-back comparison with the Si’s already excellent gearbox.
The front-wheel-drive helical limited-slip differential manages the 315 horsepower without the front-end torque steer that plagued older hot hatches at this power level. Brake-based torque vectoring further refines cornering behavior by applying individual brake pressure to the inside front wheel under load, reducing understeer and allowing the driver to rotate the car more precisely at corner entry. In testing, the Type R pulled 1.04g on the skidpad and stopped from 70 mph in 152 feet.
Zero to 60 mph comes in 4.9 seconds under ideal conditions. The quarter-mile runs in 13.5 seconds at 106 mph. On the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the current generation Civic Type R holds the front-wheel-drive production car lap record. These are not numbers that require qualification.
The adaptive suspension system, standard across all modes, adjusts damping in real time based on road conditions and driver inputs. In Comfort mode the Type R is genuinely livable on broken pavement and highway expansion joints. In Plus-R mode it is firm to the point of demanding attention. The range between those two extremes is wider than most buyers expect from a car with this performance capability.
