2025 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Overview

What’s new:

  • The AMG GT 43 Coupe is a new entry-level car.
  • The car is also available in the new AMG GT 63 S Pro and AMG GT 63 S E Performance trims.
  • There aren’t many changes to the AMG GT car.
  • The newest version of AMG GT coupes came out last year, and the sedan will follow in 2019.

Mercedes-AMG GT is the name of both the brand’s two-door sports car and a four-door coupe-style car that is built on it. The AMG GT coupe got a big redesign for 2024, while the AMG GT sedan has been on the market since 2019. The top-of-the-line AMG GT 63 S E Performance model has a turbocharged V8 hybrid system that can produce over 800 horsepower, while the base coupe has a surprisingly powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Both cars have a sleek design.

The AMG GT car line-up for 2025 is completed by the top-of-the-line AMG GT 63 S E Performance and a brand-new base model, the AMG GT 43. The AMG GT 43 only comes with rear-wheel drive, but it has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine. This may not sound like much for a high-end car like the AMG GT, but it’s 416 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque will not let you down. The new AMG GT 63 S E Performance coupe is sure to please people who want more speed. An electric motor with eight cylinders and turbochargers makes up the 4.0-liter V8 engine. It has 805 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque. AMG also has a new race-ready car called the GT 63 Pro 4Matic+. This model has 21-inch wheels with sticky summer tires, carbon-ceramic brakes, and other streamlining features.

The Porsche 911 and Chevrolet Corvette are two high-end sports cars that you might want to consider. The AMG GT is more focused on luxury than its competitors, offering more exciting driving experiences. The Porsche Panamera, the Audi S7 and RS 7, and the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe are all good cars to consider. Check out our Expert Rating to see how the AMG GT compares to other cars in the same class.

Pros

  • The V8 models deliver thrilling and rapid acceleration.
  • The infotainment system is intuitive and user-friendly.
  • The sport seats provide excellent support while maintaining a comfortable, open feel.

Cons

  • Limited interior storage options.
  • Excessive road noise, especially for a luxury sedan.
  • Large pillars and small mirrors cause pronounced blind spots.

What about how the AMG GT is driven? The AMG GT 53 has been tried out. In town, the engine feels strong, quick to respond, and very smooth. The basic all-wheel drive technology gives you a lot of grip. The AMG GT 53 went from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds on our test track. There are other competitive six-cylinder sports cars, like the BMW 840i Gran Coupe and the Audi S7, that are about the same price. The automatic transmission downshifts quickly when it needs to, but it does so easily most of the time. The AMG’s engine stop-start technology is also very quiet.

The engine of the AMG GT 53 is very powerful, but the rest of the car isn’t as good. Not as well as the Porsche Panamera or the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, the AMG GT 53 hides its size. But all the cars in this class are big and heavy. The suspension lets it turn on a flat surface, but the steering isn’t as sharp as we’d expect from a truly great sports car. The brakes look like they would be strong enough for normal driving, but they didn’t do well in our emergency stopping distance tests. The turning radius of this car is also big, which makes it hard to make tight U-turns.

How well does the AMG GT make you feel? We don’t like how stiff the AMG GT’s suspension will be for a sports car. Compared to the Audi S7 or the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe, the car makes more noise from the road inside, but it’s more comfy on smooth roads. We’d like to hear less noise from the road and the wind. At the very least, the inline-six exhaust noise sounds good.

It was possible to get AMG Performance seats for our test car. However, they aren’t very flexible and aren’t very padded unless you pay extra for the extra adjustment package. A bench seat in the back and warm and cooled seats are all available as options. It looks like nickel and dime to us. Still, the front seats are comfy, and the back seats are well-padded.

How is the inside? The entertainment system in the AMG GT is hard to get used to, but that’s because it can do so many things. It’s easy to use the touchscreen or touchpad on the center console to move between settings. There are also a lot of physical buttons that make it easy to view media or move around. Some of the buttons in the center panel are actually small screens. They look great, but they’re completely invisible when you wear polarized shades. The gear switch is also in a strange place.

It might be hard to get in and out. You have to duck before you step in because the doors have high sills, and the roof is low. The heavily reinforced Performance seats in our test car made getting in and out even harder. Once you’re sitting down, the driving position is set low, which some people might not like. This, along with the small windows, makes it hard to see outside the car, though the great surround-view cams do help.

How does the tech work? The AMG GT sedan has Mercedes’ MBUX entertainment system and one of the best guidance systems on the market today. There isn’t a lot of extra stuff on the map, so it’s easy to read and understand. There are several ways to give directions, such as using the tablet or Mercedes’ well-known “Hey, Mercedes” voice command system. Voice commands are usually great. They let you do things like change the radio station, change the temperature, or even have your computer tell you a joke. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, but neither one lets you link wirelessly. Most of the time, a wireless charging pad is hidden under the cupholders. There are a few USB-C ports in both rows.

Some of Mercedes’ driving aids are standard, but most of them have to be bought as options, either by themselves or with other parts. Our car had technologies like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot recognition, lane-keeping aid, and more. Even though we kept having problems with traffic signs slowing the car down when they weren’t needed to, it worked well overall.

How are things with the storage? Even though Mercedes used coupe-like styling cues, the AMG GT doesn’t have any trunk room. The GT’s back hatch is great. Its 12.7 cubic-foot cargo space is less than that of coupe-like cars of the same size, but it is still wide and deep. The main problem is the high back trunk, which makes it hard to store things in the back.

If you need to store things inside the cabin, the center console and door pockets are about normal for this class. Something is wrong with the cupholders. They are too deep for small cups and can easily break the lid off of a small coffee cup. Also, the wireless charging pad is totally blocked when they are being used.

Have you got any kids? It might be hard to place higher car seats because the door sills are wide and the roof slopes down. The anchor points can be seen, but the seat padding blocks their view. It might also be harder to put your child in a safety seat if the seats are bucket-style.

How much fuel does it use? The EPA says that our test car, the AMG GT 53, gets 21 mpg on the highway. Overall, it got 22.4 mpg in our mixed-driving tests. That’s worse than most of its six-cylinder rivals, most of which are a lot cheaper but better than most of its V8-powered competitors.

Is the price of the AMG GT fair? The AMG GT looks and feels like a Mercedes-Benz, which is good or bad. The inside is stylish and well-thought-out, with high-end leather seats and wood trim. The car we tested had AMG Performance seats, a performance exhaust, forged alloy wheels, and driving aids like adaptive cruise control. All of it does cost money, though. It costs a lot less to get V8 power and better speed from BMW, Audi, and Cadillac.

Mercedes’ basic, engine, and corrosion warranties last an average of four years and 50,000 miles. You can get roadside assistance for four years or 50,000 miles, but there is no free maintenance like with some rivals.

It’s easy to drive, and the AMG GT 53 has a strong engine. This function is also on other Mercedes sedans. The AMG GT 53 doesn’t seem as special since the E-Class and CLS are the same in terms of features and speed. Even though it looks good, it’s not very different from Mercedes’s previous models.

That might be fine if driving was more fun. Do not get the wrong idea; the AMG GT 53 is a fast and sporty car. In simple terms, it doesn’t feel as quick or sharp as some of its rivals. Some car companies are very good at making sports sedans look smaller and lighter than they are. Even though they are all very big, these luxury cars don’t all feel the same.

With its new turbocharged six-cylinder engine, the AMG GT 53 sedan is much faster and less expensive than cars with V8 engines. It also has a long list of high-tech and luxury features, such as an MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch tablet, adjustable air-ride suspension, and more.
