We were shocked when Hyundai’s “e-Corner” four-wheel turning technology was used for the first time on a public road. A Hyundai Ioniq 5 was used as a testbed for the demonstration of the technology that took place in January. The system demonstrates how each wheel can be spun up to ninety degrees independently. This makes it possible to complete some fantastic turns and park in small spaces. It is easy to park in a parallel spot when all four wheels are locked at a 90-degree angle. To fit perfectly, the car must only pull up to the site and drive sideways. The e-Corner technology can also make precise 180-degree pivot turns by changing only the back wheels or 360-degree tank turns by changing all four wheels without taking up more space than the car’s original size. Hyundai’s Mobis parts business makes the e-Corner system. It uses special brake-by-wire and steer-by-wire technologies, as well as motors that are built into the wheels. Even though it’s clear why a system like this would be helpful, especially if you live in a busy city, the company has yet to say if it plans to make it for mass production.
