  • Wheel fairings and a tapering rear make the SM Tribute look great.
  • The elaborate screens and etched sun patterns on the doors lend the cabin a sense of lightness and tranquillity.

French companies always come up with crazy designs. A fancy part of Citroën called DS Automobiles came out with a strange new car in 2014 and is now housed under Stellantis. The DS SM Tribute is a tribute to the Citroën SM, a popular luxury coupe from the 1970s that was known for being one of the most comfortable cars of its time thanks to its aerodynamic shape and hydropneumatic suspension.

A DS SM Tribute Is A Powerful Two-Door Car From The 1970s

With its tall hood and narrowing back end, the DS SM Tribute’s shape is meant to look like the original SM. A new Mercedes-Benz E-class is about five inches longer than the SM Tribute, which is 194.5 inches long. The license plate on the first SM was placed in a glass enclosure between the headlights instead of the more common top grille, giving the front end a unique look. DS duplicated that look by using a piece of glass lit up by a three-dimensional screen.

A three-pointed star shape made of thin LED strips around the headlights and a blacked-out grille below makes the SM Tribute’s front end look sporty. The back pillar of the two-door cabin looks like it’s flying because the black roof peeks through the rear quarter panel.

DS also changed the SM’s wheel fairings to show off the tops of the 22-inch wheels and added a piece of the thin LED taillights. The two-tone look of the SM Tribute, which includes a satin finish and Gold Leaf paint, brings out its sleek lines.

The inside is just as beautiful, with a cutting-edge screen that goes along the dashboard and another screen that curves down the middle panel. The driving wheel is an odd shape—it’s rectangular—and it has a screen inside it. The SM Tribute’s cabin looks airy thanks to its ivory-colored leather and Alcantara, and the doors have a beautiful laser painting of the sun on them.

Even though DS didn’t mention an engine, we think the idea is electric since it’s 2024, and the front end has very few grille holes. According to DS, the SM Tribute probably won’t be made in its current form, but the car will change “the shape of future models that will come along at the end of the decade.”
