The Mercedes-Benz SL was the car of choice for the rich and famous in the 1970s and 1980s. The R107 generation SL was sold in the US from 1972 to 1989. It was made at a time when Mercedes-Benz cars were known for having too many features. This 560SL is a great example of the breed. It has very few miles on it and is a beautiful color. Only the older G-wagen was made by Mercedes-Benz and was longer than the R107-generation SL from the 1970s and 1980s. This made it more well-known as a sign of success. The cars are way overengineered, which is good, but many of them are in bad shape because their second, third, or fourth owners couldn’t afford the high costs of maintenance. This 1986 560SL for sale on Bring a Trailer seems to have remained in great condition. The odometer says it has only gone 15,000 miles, which is a very low mileage example of the breed. Mercedes was able to make the coupe version of this generation of SL cars into a rally car that won in both the Ivory Coast and South America, which was an unlikely feat. The thunder panzer, which had a V-8 engine, tore through the rough terrain with incredible force. This lovely convertible offers a completely different experience from that intensity. Originally sold in New York, it was likely a well-maintained weekend car. Even though it’s in Pennsylvania right now, it makes me think of cruises along the coast of California, yacht rock on the Becker stereo, and the wind in my hair. The rich Cabernet Red finish makes it look great. Even better, the 560SL model, which was released in 1986, has a powerful 5.5-liter V-8 engine, which is the model’s preferred powertrain. This is not a sports car but a high-end grand tourer that’s great for a fall drive in the country. This particular SL is a perfect example of the brand, so it’s likely to fetch a high price. You would save a lot of money by buying the best example of one of these cars instead of spending a lot of money fixing it up. No one has to pay to win this auction on September 30.
