Toyota might add a new small pickup truck based on the Corolla. This car would go against the Ford Maverick and the Hyundai Santa Cruz. There is a rumor that it will come out in 2027 and be made at the same Toyota plant in Mississippi where the Corolla is now. Toyota’s Tacoma and Tundra pickups already cover the mid-size and full-size segments, but a new, smaller pickup built on a crossover could fill the space below these trucks. Automotive News says that Toyota might make a small pickup truck built on the Corolla to compete with the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz. The name is anyone’s guess, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Toyota returned an old brand, like Stout, first used for a small truck sold in the United States in the 1960s. The Corolla-based truck would share parts with the Corolla Cross small SUV, like the Maverick and Bronco Sport, the Santa Cruz and Tucson, and the Corolla Cross and the Bronco Sport. As shown in the picture, it could replace the crossover door by combining a five-seat crew cab with a short cargo bed. Since this is a Toyota, it’s a given that it will have hybrid power. Our best guess is that the pickup’s main motor will be the 196-hp, all-wheel-drive hybrid system from the Corolla Cross. This system gets a combined 42 mpg from the EPA. It could be made more robust to carry more and pull more. In comparison, the Maverick’s optional hybrid engine only has front-wheel drive, but it can still make 191 horsepower and get 37 mpg combined. This new pickup would likely be based on a redesigned or updated Corolla Cross instead of the current model, which came out for the 2022 model year. AN said that the truck would be made in Mississippi along with the Corolla sedan, even though the Corolla Cross is made in a plant that Toyota and Mazda share in Alabama.
