A problem was found with the paint on Crandall Yopp Jr.’s 2022 Subaru WRX while he was getting an oil change at Dan Perkins Subaru in Milford, Connecticut. Yopp is now saying that two dealership techs took his sports sedan for a test drive while one of them tried to learn how to drive a manual transmission. Automotive News says that a customer is taking legal action against the store.

The story says that Yopp told the shop not to wash the WRX during an oil change because he was afraid the ceramic coating would be damaged. When he got it back, the paint was scratched and swirled, and the front license plate was bent. At that point, he realized the mechanics had done something wrong with his car. The suit says that the mechanics at the shop “multiple times ground the gears and burned the clutch,” which stopped the WRX.

A Subaru WRX was damaged by dealer staff while a customer was learning to operate a manual shift

The younger tech is said to have asked the older tech, “How long are we going to practice for—five stalls?” during the fun ride that turned into a learning lesson.

The claim says that when the car came back from an off-site car wash, Dan Perkins Subaru’s service manager saw a problem. The service manager is said to have told the two techs that the owner “is going to kill us f***ing; it was clean.” He told me not to wash it. And that’s when the techs are said to have admitted they hit the car. After that, many employees are said to have tried to hide the damage by cleaning the inside and moving the license plate back into place. Yopp is suing Dan Perkins Subaru for breaking consumer protection rules in Connecticut. He wants money for damages and attorney fees.

Every year, fewer and fewer cars come with manual gears, making it harder for people to learn how to drive them. People who own cars with stick shifts are using them less and less, but driving schools still use them to teach people how to drive. For all you dishonest sellers out there, instead of giving back a customer’s car in much worse shape than they found it, you should take a class, buy a beater, or make a friend.
