Mazda has said it will stop making the CX-9 three-row SUV after the 2023 model year. The CX-9 will be replaced by the CX-90 in 2024. The CX-90 will have a new base and different engine choices. The first model of the CX-9 came out in 2007, and the most current one in 2016. Mazda has said that the CX-9 will be taken out after the 2023 model year, which sounds like “out with the old, in with the new” at the company. Since it came out for the 2007 model year, the CX-9 has been Mazda’s three-row SUV. However, the new 2024 Mazda CX-90, which went on sale earlier this year, will now take its place. This withdrawal is not a surprise because it is part of an enormous change in Mazda’s lineup of crossover cars. The CX-90 is based on Mazda’s new longitudinal-engine platform and comes with either a turbocharged inline-six engine or a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The CX-9, the other hand, is based on the company’s transverse-engine design and is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The CX-90 starts at $40,970, a little more than the CX-9, which starts at $40,125. However, the CX-90 is marketed as a higher-end product because its top trim levels cost more than $60,000, while the CX-9’s maximum trim levels cost around $50,000. 2007 was the model year for the first-generation CX-9, and 2016 was the model year for the second-generation CX-9. But when we looked at a 2020 model made for a while, the third-row seat was complete, and the car started showing its age. Still, we liked how driving was fun and had expensive interior features. Later this year, the two-row CX-70 SUV will be added to the CX-90 SUV in Mazda’s SUV range. This new mid-size car will have an inline-six engine and a new horizontal engine design. It should be similar to the CX-60, made for markets outside the United States. Still selling well, sales of the CX-9 are up 7% in 2023 compared to the same time last year. In the first half of the year, Mazda sold 17,359 CX-9s but only 5,704 CX-90s. Mazda has yet to say when it will stop making the CX-9, so some 2023 models will likely remain available at American stores.
