They must make many plans before a contestant even gets to the track for OPTIMA’s Search for the Ultimate Street Car, presented by Advance Auto Parts. If their car weighs close to 3200 pounds, do they exceed or exceed the limit? Suppose they want to win a trip to SEMA and the OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational (OUSCI) in a qualifying event. Later-season events are sometimes better because more tickets have already been given out. If they want to get the most points, they’ll choose events that aren’t full or happen early in the season before other players have figured out how to get in.

When a track like Laguna Seka is added to the schedule, all that planning is useless, especially on a weekend when there are no rules about noise. When given a chance to race on a track like that, many choose the experience over the plan. Because of this, 100 people signed up to run at Laguna Esca, even though it was 53 hours away. By the end of the weekend, no one had said that the extra work it took to get to Laguna Esca juice wasn’t worth it, no matter where they came from. And if you’ve never driven on their amazing hairpin, you should go to Laguna Esca.

Drivers’ overall point totals are based on their best two places in a series. At Laguna Esca, 39 42 drivers who had already raced this season got lower scores. Jordan Priestley’s 2021 Tesla Model 3, which came in second and had the same number of points as earlier in the year, and Bob Scobey’s 2013 Nissan GT-R, which won the GTS Class with 498 out of 500 points and was the OUSCI winner from last year, did not.

Also, after three races, the battle for the season’s top spots shows that people from west of the Rocky Mountains, where many have already done two events, have a significant advantage. This will likely happen again at the race in July at Portland International Raceway. After Portland, the last three races will be at Road America, Daytona International Speedway, and Virginia International Raceway, all east of the Mississippi River.

This makes for an interesting situation because competitors from the West Coast who want to avoid driving far to the last three qualifying events must watch from far away to see if their scores hold up. They will have a significant edge over East Coast teams because the Portland race coming up and the Underhill race earlier this season will likely have smaller, less competitive fields where they can earn more points. On the other hand, Road America and VIR have waiting lists, and Daytona, which already has 94 entries, is likely to do the same. Because VIR is a smaller track, the field will be smaller than in other ways, but it will still be full of top racers who want one last chance to prepare for SEMA and OUSCI.

That makes it sound like the next event in Portland is a must-go, but we will know for sure in July. In the meantime, people who went to Laguna Esca can watch the Roku stream replay of the event on the OPTIMA Network to relive it or see if they missed anything.
