• Audi is abandoning the policy it announced only two years ago and changing its naming system once more.
  • Even numbers will no longer be exclusively assigned to EVs, which will instead continue using the e-tron name, while TFSI will be used to identify gas-powered models.
  • The first change will be the new gas-powered A6, which was supposed to be the A7 but will now be released as the A6 on March 4.

Audi started using a name system just two years ago, but now it is changing it. In early 2023, Audi announced that their electric vehicles (EVs) would have even numbers in their names while their gas-powered cars would have odd numbers. The new 2025 A5, which has taken the place of the A4 as the brand’s smaller luxury car, was launched last year as the first step in this change. The A4 e-tron electric vehicle was meant to take the place of the gas-powered A4. Audi has announced that it will stop using names for its cars and switch to numbers to show the size of its vehicles.

Audi Discontinues Naming System That Designated Even Numbers For EVs

Audi explained that they had changed their naming system because both sellers and customers found it confusing. They had been using even numbers for electric vehicles (EVs) and odd numbers for gasoline-powered cars. Audi might be making things more confusing while trying to clear up the original mistake.

Look at the 2025 Audi A5. The new small car will still be called the A5, even though it will replace the A4 sedan and has not yet made a two-door coupe like the old A5. The A5 Sportback, a four-door version of the earlier A5 model, did appear. Audi announced that it would not change the names of its current cars. However, a gas-powered A4 might be offered in the future.

This year, Audi planned to introduce a new version of the A6 sedan. This new model was supposed to be called the A7 to show that it has a gas engine, unlike the A6 e-tron, which follows a different naming system. Audi says this car will still be sold under the A6 name, along with the A6 e-tron. Audi stated that the new four-door model will be available for sale on March 4.

Audi will use familiar names for their powertrains instead of using even or odd numbers. Gas Audis will have “TFSI” labels, while electric models will keep “e-tron” at the end of their names. TDI will remain the label for diesel engines in Europe. For example, Audi will name the new A6 gas type the A6 TFSI to set it apart from the A6 e-tron. It’s unclear how this new naming approach will impact Audi’s future plans after the A6 is released.
