When the Chevy Silverado EV Work Truck (WT) goes on sale to the public, the introductory price will be around $52K. On its customer website, Chevy used to take pre-orders for the WT, which started at less than $42,000. In the fall, buyers can buy the $106,895 RST First Edition, and fleets can buy the $79,800 Silverado EV 4WT. Chevrolet promises that more cheap cars will come after. Electric pickup trucks are becoming more common, but as we’ve seen with the price hikes of the Ford F-150 Lightning, cost management is more challenging than automakers thought it would be. The most recent example is the new Chevy Silverado EV, whose starting price is said to have gone up by about $10,000 before it even leaves the dealer’s lot. The goal still needs to be reached Early this year, Chevy’s website for consumers took $100 down payments for pre-orders of the electric Silverado. Before the destination fee, the starting price was $39,900. The destination fee brought the MSRP closer to $42,000. At the first test drive of the fleet-specific Silverado EV 4WT, Scott Bell, Global Vice President of Chevrolet, told us that the company no longer thinks it can meet that original goal. The new price for the Silverado EV, mentioned on Chevy’s media website, backs up that exciting fact. The truck will now start at a retail price of $50,000, plus a reasonable landing fee of $1895, for a total of $51,895. The new base price for the WT model will likely be the same as the base model. Car and Driver have asked a Chevy representative about the price increase and why it happened, but we have yet to hear back. Other Silverado EVs cost about the same. The base price for the first model, which is only offered to fleets, is $79,800. Soon, a cheaper 3WT type with a shorter expected range (350 miles instead of 450 miles for the 4WT) will be available, but it will only be for business clients. This fall, you can buy the Silverado EV RST First Edition, but it will cost you a whopping $106,895. Chevy says that there will be more cheap cars for sale after that. The Silverado EV will come in WT, Trail Boss, and other trim levels that have yet to be named. Chevrolet says costs will start “from $50,000, $60,000, $70,000, $80,000, and more.” We are still determining if these price goals will be raised before the trucks hit the stores.
