2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E Overview

A decade ago, we would have never thought that the next vehicle to get the famous Mustang logo would be an all-electric SUV. The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E is not mechanically related to the legendary two-door sports car. Still, it takes on many of its styling cues and offers a sporty driving experience that fits a vehicle with a galloping horse logo.

There are EVs with better speed and some with longer ranges, but the Mach-E is one of the few that gets these two essential things right. With all-wheel drive, the Ford SUV can go up to 314 miles. It looks like a wagon. It can reach 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, which is its top speed. The suspension is excellent at smoothing out bumps in the road, and the cabin does a great job of blocking road noise. This makes it a joy to drive around town.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E competes against other electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6, the Tesla Model Y, the Volkswagen ID.4, and the Volvo XC40 Recharge.

How do you move the Ford Mustang Mach-E? Even though the Mach-E looks like an SUV wagon, it has the speed and agility you’d expect from a Mustang. We tested a Mach-E Premium model with an extended-range battery and all-wheel drive. It took less than 5.2 seconds to get from 0 to 60 miles per hour on the test track. Invoice Pricing is provided. Regarding speed, the Tesla Type Y is faster than some of its competitors, but the Mach-E, at least the model we tested, is a joy to drive.

Ford has changed how this all-wheel-drive SUV drives, making it feel more like a rear-wheel-drive sports sedan. At times, it’s fun and exciting. During a transition, there is a lot of movement, but it is controlled and stable.

During everyday driving, the Mach-E has a ride that is as smooth as butter. One-pedal driving is possible because the regenerative braking system works so well that you can stop the car by taking your foot off the accelerator. The brake pedal is a little soft and grabby, which makes it hard to stop smoothly when driving usually. We like it better this way. Ford can change the settings with a later software update that can do over the air.

How lovely is the Mustang Mach-E to ride in? The suspension is good at smoothing out big bumps in the road, the cabin is well protected from wind and noise from outside, and the climate control system is excellent and easy to use. Even though we’d like air vents for the seats in warmer weather, the optional seat and steering wheel heaters warm up quickly.

Even though the chair padding isn’t as soft and squishy as memory foam, it is still pretty comfortable and lets more air flow through. The seats don’t have other significant changes, like a longer lower thigh cushion for drivers with longer legs. You only have a little to do on the side. There are no extra-change seats available, which is a shame.

How does the inside look? One of our new favorites is the latest Ford Sync 4 infotainment system, which was made for the Mach-15.5-inch E’s center touchscreen. There is a handy shortcut bar, and the menus are easy to use. This bar is updated often based on the functions used most often. Unlike the Tesla Model Y, the Mach-E has a 10.2-inch digital drive cluster that puts essential information right in front of the driver.

Even while the front seats aren’t as adjustable as those in a typical luxury sedan, most drivers should be able to find a comfortable position. There is plenty of room for adults in the back. Even though the Mach-fastback E has a low roof, the view is surprisingly good, and accessing the cabin is simple. The door releases on the Mach-push-button E are beautiful and valuable, but we need to find out how long they’ll last.

How good is the tech? Mach-interior E has outstanding technology. We like the enormous 15.5-inch touchscreen in the middle, supported by traditional controls like a volume knob. Unlike the Model Y, you can connect your phone wirelessly with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (though you can still connect through a USB cord). The navigation system in Ford cars is responsive and well-made, but it is more challenging to use than some other systems.

The Premium trim level has a great Bang & Olufsen 10-speaker audio system with AM/FM and XM satellite radio for a complete listening experience. Our test car also had 360-degree cameras, lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring as part of its high-tech driver aids. Some of the aids couldn’t be used because it was an early version, but the ones that could utilize did so perfectly.

What about putting things away? The Mach-trunk E’s is made like a hatch, which lets it hold more cargo. Ford says that there are 29 cubic feet of space in there. The Model Y is more comfortable, especially underfloor. But a very clever flexible cargo cover can be taken off entirely or swung up and fastened to the back hatch. The Mach-split E’s foldable back seats make it possible to carry more cargo. Even though the front trunk is small, it has a drain hole that lets you use it as a cooler that you can fill with ice and empty.

A two-level console in the front makes the cabin look more prominent and gives you a lot of space to store your things. The pockets on the side doors are big enough but not very tall. Even though the wireless charging station in front of the cupholders looks like it could fit two phones, it only has enough power to charge one phone.

Do you have young kids? Anchor points for child safety seats are hidden behind slots in the center back. They are easy to use but only stand out as much as Isofix anchors from Europe.

How is the range, and how well does it work? The information below is based on our testing of a 2021 Mustang Mach-E. Even though the EPA’s predicted range grew significantly after 2022, the information below is still mostly accurate. With a battery efficiency of 37 kWh per 100 miles, an all-wheel-drive Mach-E in 2021 is expected to have a range of 270 miles. These are both typical numbers for a high-end electric car.

In real-world range tests, the Mach-E did better. Energy consumption was 33.1 kWh/100 km. A single charge would take it 304 miles, which was further than the EPA claimed it could go. Most of the EVs we tested did better than the EPA said they would, except for Tesla’s cars.

Ford claims that the Mach-E can be fully charged from a 10-minute halt on a 150-kW DC fast charger or from 10-80% in 45 minutes. A connected charge is the name of the home charging station that Ford sells. It’s a robust charger that, like Tesla’s Wall Connector, can add up to 30 miles of charge per hour.

How much money does the Mustang Mach-E cost? Unlike Tesla, Ford’s EV credits are still in effect, which makes the Mach-E a perfect choice because it could save you money. The quality of the building as a whole is good, and the cabin is decorated in a friendly Scandinavian style. If the doors and steering wheel didn’t have the typical Ford switches, you might think the car was a Lincoln.

Ford’s warranty isn’t as good as its luxury competitors, but not by much. The coverage lasts for three years and 36,000 miles from bumper to bumper and five years and 60,000 miles for the powertrain. The electric parts warranty lasts eight years or 100,000 miles, covering at least 70% of the battery’s original capacity.

When Ford said it was making an electric SUV based on the Mustang, most of our team laughed. It was done in some way by the people who designed it. Despite how it looks, the Mach-E is very useful. Ford did an excellent job of giving the Mach-E a driving personality by making it uniquely handle turns. Surprisingly fun on a country road with lots of turns. Some EVs are less attractive than this one.

As of this writing, Ford has not told anything official about the 2023 Mustang Mach-E. Suppose anything changes; we’ll change our recommendation based on last year’s Mach-E. In that case, we’d recommend the Premium trim for its mix of luxurious and valuable features and its wide range of battery and motor configurations.
