• Now we have our first look at the black-and-gold car that will be in the untitled Formula 1 movie from Apple Original Films.
  • In the movie, Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, trained race car drivers, will play the two drivers for the made-up APXGP team.
  • Joseph Kosinski, who made Top Gun: Maverick, will be in charge of the project, and it will use actual footage of the APXGP car on the track from this weekend’s British Grand Prix.

Cadillac and Andretti Autosport got much attention earlier this year when they said they wanted to join Formula One as the 11th team. This weekend’s British Grand Prix won’t have 11 teams. The Andretti Cadillac team won’t be one of them. Instead, a made-up group called “APXGP” will be the main character in an F1 movie that Apple Original Films will make but not name.

Apple Studios announced last summer that they would make a Formula 1 movie to take advantage of the rise in fame of open-wheel racing thanks to the Netflix show Drive to Survive. Images from F1 shared by Apple Original Films give us our first look at the race car that will be in the movie.

The car’s design isn’t an exact copy of the cars on the grid right now, but it is in line with the most current rules, which were put in place in 2022 and put a lot of emphasis on ground-effect downforce. Racer.com says that the APXGP car in the movie is a Formula 2 chassis that Mercedes and the British racing team Carlin rebuilt.

The APXGP car’s black and gold colour scheme reminds me of the controversial Rich Energy-sponsored Haas car from 2019 and the famous John Player Special-sponsored Lotus F1 cars from the 1970s and 1980s. It’s important to note that sponsors like IWC, Tommy Hilfiger, and Expensify helped pay for the paint. The big AMG logo that runs the length of the engine cover hints that Mercedes-AMG F1 will show the made-up team as a customer. Lewis Hamilton drives for Mercedes, and Tommy Hilfiger is one of his sponsors. IWC is a supporter of the Mercedes F1 team.

Hamilton will make the movie to be as accurate as possible. In the FX show Snowfall, Brad Pitt and Damson Idris will play the two drivers on the team in the film. Joseph Kosinski is the director. He was in charge of making the mega-hit movie Top Gun: Maverick.

The film crew will be taking pictures at the British Grand Prix. APP will park in a garage between Mercedes and Ferrari. The names of two made-up drivers, Sonny Hayes (Pitt) and Joshua Pearce (Idris), will be written on their pit lane spot. The rest of the team comprises a paddock hospitality room and a pit wall command centre. While the APXGP car is being filmed on the road, it will also be driven by professionals. Pitt and Idris have been training, and Kosinski will give them some screen time to cut down on CGI, just like he did with Maverick. Even though there isn’t a set date for when it will come out, and since shooting is still going on, we wouldn’t expect to see it in theatres for at least another year.
