Many big businesses have said they want to switch from Tesla’s NACS (North American Charging Standard) connection to the universal CCS charging port in most electric vehicles. Many companies, including GM, Ford, Jaguar Land Rover, and Mercedes-Benz, have switched or are currently doing so. The Korean carmaker has said that its electric cars will use NACS plugs in the U.S. when the third quarter of 2024 comes to a close.

The Ioniq 7 will likely be the first new Hyundai EV to use NACS, but it will also be in any Ioniq 5 or Ioniq 6 made after Q4 2024. Once Hyundai’s EVs have NACS connectors, customers can use more than 12,000 Tesla Supercharger stations. This will double the number of charges they can use. But Canadians will be able to use NACS or Superchargers in the first half of 2025.

Hyundai still remembers people who already own EVs with CCS. In the first quarter of 2025, Hyundai will start to sell an adapter that will let EV owners use Superchargers.

Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s senior director of charging, said, “Opening up our Supercharging network to more electric vehicles is a direct part of our mission to speed up the world’s transition to greener forms of power.” The most recent firm to implement the North American Charging Standard is Hyundai, and we couldn’t be happier that they did.

The same is true for Kia, whose electric vehicles after the fourth quarter of 2024 can use both NACS ports and Superchargers. So, in the first quarter of 2025, adapters will be sent to Niro EVs, EV6s, and EV9s owners. Kia North American cars can use the Superchargers’ autopay feature once equipped with NACS and the Kia Connect app. Even though both Tesla and Hyundai use the same electric vehicle (EV) systems, Hyundai did not say if its cars can autopay like Tesla’s.

Hyundai customers will benefit from the switch to NACS because they will have more charging points. Giving access to customers of other brands would help get more standard customers to buy EVs since Tesla’s Supercharger network is one of the best reasons to buy a Tesla instead of another EV. After working with GM, BMW, and Mercedes to set up a new charging system in North America, Hyundai is now taking this step.
