• Toyota made a new type of car called the Crown for the Japanese market.
  • This high-end car has a hydrogen fuel cell or hybrid engine and drives from the back wheels.
  • In the United States, we can’t get this particular Crown model, but we can get another Crown car, and an SUV is on the way.

We’re getting to know the Crown nameplate better since Toyota sells the Crown car in the US and is working on a Crown SUV, which could be called the Crown Signia. There are even more Crowns to choose from in Japan, and Toyota just released the newest model, which is called the Crown “sedan type.”

This type, a big luxury sedan with rear-wheel drive and a simple look, is more in line with the Crown brand’s classic style. The new Crown looks more like the hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai than older models because it has a more swooping shape. It has a long length, a roomy back seat with sunshades, and big headrests in the back. All of these features are helpful for drivers.

The Crown car comes with a hybrid powertrain that has a 2.5-liter gasoline engine as standard. Toyota says this hybrid car has two electric motors and a geared drive, while other Toyota hybrid cars use a planetary gear set. In addition, there is a hydrogen fuel-cell version that looks a lot like the Mirai. However, Toyota says the Crown can go more than 500 miles on a single tank of gas.

Price ranges for hybrid and fuel-cell cars in Japan start at about $48,000 and $55,000, respectively. Toyota has chosen not to sell the Crown in other countries, but in Japan, it will have a membership service.
