Chery, a Chinese car company owned by the government, wants to sell cars in the United States. An office of the company will be opened in the US, but Brian Wu, executive vice president of Chery Mexico, won’t say when. “[The American market is] critical to us.” “Frankly, I can’t say much more about our strategy,” Wu said. We already have a plan for how to get into the United States.

Chery has already tried to sell her goods in the United States before. After a failed attempt in 2005, a shipper was used to try to bring Chery cars into the country early in 2020. Wu says this time will be different from all the others. He told the press, “I don’t want to tell the same story again.” Today is different from yesterday. Twenty years ago, things were different from now on.

Wu said it needs to be earlier for Chery to talk about its new strategy for the American market. He did say that the company is working on a product line and choosing which names to work with. Who will get there first: Chery or Exeed? We haven’t decided yet. According to him, “We have a rough idea of what we want to offer.”

Exeed, Omoda, and Jetour are some of Chery’s foreign brands. The last two are aimed at global markets. Exeed is a high-end brand that wants to go up against Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. All the companies have grown outside of China and now make cars with gasoline engines, electric motors, and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Wu said there would be both EVs and PHEVs, but he would need to find out which types would be sold in the US. “Mainly [our focus] is with new energy vehicles, but maybe some models will be ICE,” according to the executive.

Wu stated that Chery’s goods meet customer expectations, even though quality and safety standards are much stricter in the United States. “I am confident we can introduce these models [from Mexico] to the American market.” There is no issue to be found with the product’s quality. “Whether a consumer likes it or not, it’s a different situation,” he said.

Chery first appeared in Mexico in 2022 and has grown significantly since then. It already sells more cars than well-known names like Honda, Subaru, and Suzuki in Mexico. The company is called Chirey. The company wants to build a facility in Mexico that can hold 400,000 cars later this year, but the exact site has yet to be made public. Wu thinks that the Mexican plant will make EVs and PHEVs and that it will also make any cars that are going to the US.
