• In the new movie Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which will be released on March 22, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter plays Ecto-Z.
  • The Ecto-1, also called the “Ectomobile,” was first introduced in 1959 as a Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance. The Ecto-Z is the van form of that car.
  • The black Sprinter isn’t as stylish as the Caddy, but it does have a useful pull-out rack in the back that can hold a lot of Proton packs and other gear.

A lot of people know the Ghostbusters movies for three things: ghosts, the team that fights ghosts, and the Ectomobile, which they use to hunt ghosts. The Ecto-1, one of the most famous cars in movie history, started as a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance. It was used to study ghosts by Drs. Winston Zeddemore, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, and Peter Venkman were the main characters. A Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van named Ecto-Z, after Zeddemore, is a new mechanical character in the new Ghostbusters movie, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which comes out on March 22.

You don’t have to worry that the main characters in the next movie have given up on the sleek Caddy in favor of the #vanlife; the Frozen Empire clip shows that the Ecto-1 is still a major character. It can be seen rushing through the streets of New York in several scenes. The flashing blue lights on its roof make you think of its famous warning sounds. Even though the Mercedes model is less well-known, we still love how the ad blends two of our favorite things: German-made cargo vans and the Ghostbusters movie.

The Sprinter Ecto-Z is easy to spot because it has huge Ghostbusters logos on the sides and split back doors, but it doesn’t have any fins or a small side ladder. Its paint job is red and white. Even though it doesn’t look like it has any alarms, everyone will know who was just called. The van has black paint and steel wheels that look like these. What’s our best part? A rack with proton packs, ghost traps, and muon scrubbers comes out when the back doors are opened.

Mercedes doesn’t say much about the engine, but it’s probably a diesel with four cylinders and one or two turbochargers. This is how the Sprinter’s high-output engine is set up. It makes 322 pounds-feet of torque and 211 horsepower when paired with all-wheel drive. The seats are heated, which is good news in case the Ghostbusters’ behinds get cold in the “frozen empire.”
