• Motor1 says that the 2025 Volvo EX90 shoppers will receive will have a few extras.
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay, two-way charging, and cross-traffic detection with automatic stopping have been postponed.
  • In the future, most of these features will be added through free over-the-air patches.

There are some problems with Volvo’s newest electric cars. The company said earlier this week that the EX30, which was supposed to come out in the US this summer with a starting price of around $30,000, would not be coming out this summer because of higher taxes in the US on electric cars (EVs) made in China. The company’s showpiece, the 2025 EX90, was supposed to start in early 2024 but was pushed back, and some of its equipment won’t be working when it gets there.

Customers will get a 2025 Volvo EX90 that doesn't have all of its features

Volvo is sending emails to people who have reserved an EX90 with a link to a list of things that “may be delayed when taking delivery of your EX90,” according to Motor1. Two features on the list are meant to help the driver: cross-traffic alert with automatic stopping and curve speed help, which slows the car down when adaptive cruise control or Pilot aid is turned on. The website also says that in the future, there will be an update that will let the lidar technology work at its best.

Also, customers will have to wait in line to use Apple CarPlay wirelessly, and the infotainment screen and digital gauge panel will have to be turned off for a short time. It also changes the way charges are made. Even though the cars can charge in both directions, owners won’t be able to send power from their cars back to their homes or into the grid right away. The Smart Charging plan, which figures out when to charge based on price, efficiency, and expected exit times, has also been pushed back.

While the EX90 may experience a small drop in battery life when parked due to the main computer needing power, Volvo assures that this will be rectified in a future update. The battery life drops by about 3% every day, and if left uncharged for 72 hours, it will go into ‘deep sleep’ mode to conserve power.

The first package of EX90s also doesn’t have the “Plug & Charge” feature. Chargers can be plugged in without a credit card or an app, and they will be charged instantly through a charging account that has already been set up. Motor1 says that most of these features will be offered through free over-the-air updates. Some types may need to be taken to a Volvo dealer, and owners will be told ahead of time.
